Stella and Pearl belong to two different communities of Sneetches that are enemies of each other. The story, narrated by a bird named David, revolves around two communities of Sneetches: the moon-bellied Sneetches and the star-bellied Sneetches. As their names suggest, the moon-bellied ones have a moon on their bellies, while the star-bellied ones have a star.
