A man leaves his girlfriend at her parents' house when, by chance, he runs into her father and is forced to spend time with the family. Thus, we have a series of scenes with mostly static cameras, in which the man navigates various minefields with the family.
For those who fall into the small niche of people interested in this kind of thing and have seen Roy Andersson's films since his comeback, this film will have a similar feel. Not quite as absurd, but with the same rhythm and dry humor. It's not quite a full-fledged Andersson film, but you know, pretty close.
Director: Hong Sang-soo
Writer: Hong Sang-soo
Stars: Ha Seong-guk, Kwon Hae-hyo, Cho Yun-hee
It's an entertaining film, but definitely not for everyone. In fact, it's one of those things I wouldn't know who to recommend it to, even here in Finland, where Andersson is quite popular in certain circles.
There are only five people in the film, and, oddly enough, the filming locations are also credited. There aren't many of them either. Most of the scenes are in the house, but some scenes take place at a temple and a restaurant. There's not much adrenaline either.
Overall, it's all a bit awkward. The guy is meeting his parents for the first time after three years of dating their daughter, which is understandable, but the daughter doesn't always make things easier either.
There are some comments about a specific lifestyle, but due to the film's dry tone, there's not much indication of its stance on the matter, so one could argue that it's simply suggesting this is something to consider.
