Greetings again from the darkness. The latest installment of the HBO Music Box documentary series, directed by Amy Scott, offers a perfect example of what can happen when a band achieves overnight success. It’s not always pretty, and sometimes it’s downright uncomfortable. Counting Crows’ popularity skyrocketed with the release of their 1993 debut album, "August and Everything After." The hit single "Mr. Jones" was everywhere on the radio, followed by an even better song, "Round Here." The band and their music were ubiquitous.
Director Scott allows the band's frontman, vocalist, and songwriter, Adam Duritz, ample time to explain what happened after the band's second album, "Recovering the Satellites," was a huge success... though not quite as big as the first. Adulation was mixed with fierce criticism. Duritz confesses his struggles with mental health and the delay in receiving a proper diagnosis.
Director: Amy Scott
Stars: Adam Duritz, Steve Kerr, Cyndi Lauper
We also hear from other band members, as well as musicians Cyndi Lauper and Chris Martin (Coldplay), discussing the impact of the music, as well as the pressure and stress that fame brings to artists. At times, it feels like we're in a therapy session with Duritz, though the music reminds us otherwise.
Additionally, NBA coach Steve Kerr, actress Mary-Louise Parker (who was romantically involved with Duritz), and comedian Jeffrey Ross also offer their perspectives on fame. Their comments help us understand why the success and criticism were so difficult for Duritz. The Counting Crows story has some fascinating aspects. This little band from Berkeley recorded a demo that sparked a bidding war among record labels and led to the great T-Bone Burnett producing their first album. The importance of MTV is discussed, and a spectacular video of the band performing on "Saturday Night Live" is included, along with the story of why they were never invited back.
Despite the criticism and internal struggles, the band continued to make music. Duritz finally received a correct diagnosis, and his current partner, Zoe Mintz, offers insight into his personality. This isn't exactly a fairy tale story, as it seems the band suffered as much as they enjoyed their success... but for a guy who worked as a waiter at the Viper Room, Adam Duritz has written some great songs and performed them with a wonderful voice. It premieres on HBO on December 18, 2025.
