A former detective returns to his job to investigate ritualistic murders.
For those who enjoy crime thrillers, “City of Shadows” is a series that's easy to binge-watch. The plot revolves around Inspector Milo Malart, a former detective whose career ended due to a scandal and a turbulent personal life. But Milo refuses to give up. He is drawn back to the duty he once performed, due to a gruesome case he learns about.
Stars: Verónia Echegui, Manolo Solo, Marc Clotet
To solve it, he partners with Sub-Inspector Rebeca Garrido, a sharp and determined officer who also has her own problems. This case leads them to explore the criminal underworld of Barcelona. The case is not simple; it involves a ritual. Together, they must find answers to crucial questions while facing increasing pressure from the media and the public.
The theme of ritualistic murders is very interesting, and the plot, which revolves around their investigation, is quite intriguing. The series is short, with only six episodes of approximately forty minutes each, making it ideal for binge-watching. However, the pacing is uneven at times, which can be a little annoying. But given the quality of the plot, this can be overlooked.
I also loved the character development. Often, we see series or movies where the main focus is on the plot. However, here the focus is also on the characters. We are shown the personal struggles that shape the lives of our two protagonists. They don't have it easy at any point. Even during the investigation, they continue to grapple with their personal problems.
Furthermore, it's worth highlighting how the city becomes a character in itself. Barcelona contributes a great deal to the series, exploring the city's criminal underworld. The iconic landmarks and the overall aesthetic of Barcelona are magnificently showcased throughout the series.
It's true that many things are predictable, but since these are procedural aspects, they can be ignored, allowing you to focus on the plot. The cast also does a great job. Isak Férriz and Verónica Echegui deliver excellent performances as their characters. Their way of expressing emotions is what draws us to the series. They are undoubtedly one of the main reasons to watch it.
However, some scenes may be disturbing due to the violence and explicit imagery. Therefore, it's important to keep this in mind before deciding to watch it. But if this doesn't bother you, you can watch it without hesitation.
