José Luis Conejera decides to cheat the lottery system to win a big prize and escape the economic depression.
So, for those who enjoyed the series Ocean's and Casino Royale, this might also intrigue you. We all dream of winning a jackpot that makes us instantly rich. And this series follows the same premise. The plot revolves around the life of José Luis Conejera, a civil servant who no longer has much hope in life. As a child, he dreamed of being a race car driver, but that dream has faded due to the mundane work and tasks that life throws at him.
Stars: Alejandro Cuétara, Alberto Guerra, Ana Brenda Contreras
He lives with his girlfriend, Laura, and his teenage daughter, who, coincidentally, is a great race car driver. José Luis Conejera strongly supports his racial beliefs and is an extremely proud man. Things change drastically when he suffers increasing pressure from his corrupt boss at work, and the country faces an economic stagnation, which also affects him.
He decides to take a chance on the lottery. But here's the catch: he doesn't just buy lottery tickets and wait for the results, leaving everything to chance. He rigs the lottery to forge his own prize. To do this, he assembles a team of people who agree to participate in this supposed "heist." He manipulates the balls, ensuring they only produce his numbers.
While this might sound interesting, what makes it even more compelling is that this series is based on a true story centered around the Mexican lottery. There are many aspects to its strength. For example, the character of José Luis Conejera, played by Alberto Guerra, is multifaceted. We see a frustrated man, but also one determined to change his life. That's a positive aspect of the series. The way the creators present their story, blending past and present, certainly makes it worth watching. However, the plot is a bit confusing. It has unexpected twists that are left somewhat unexplained. The pacing is also a little problematic. It's slow, and some scenes drag on for no apparent reason. I don't know why the creators didn't pay more attention to it. That said, I still think these aspects can be easily overlooked.
But the core of the plot is good. We see a mastermind at work. And if you enjoy unraveling things, you'll really enjoy watching the story. It offers just the right amount of intrigue, which will keep you hooked from beginning to end. So, while it may not be the best film, considering the plot's similarity to previous movies and series, perhaps it's not fair to dismiss it solely for that reason.
