A Newport Christmas 2025 Movie Review Trailer Poster

If there's one particular criticism that has weighed heavily on the world of Hallmark Channel Christmas movies, it would be... that they always stick to the same thing. Many have pointed out that they follow a formula, and that they simply stick to it, and that fans are probably doomed to see the same variation of the same idea until audiences get tired of the same old thing. But the fascinating thing about this criticism is that it's unfounded.

For the past few years, Hallmark Channel has been working hard on new concepts and much more for these movies, to try to attract a new audience, while also giving regular fans who love romance and the Christmas spirit what they want. As proof, look no further than this weekend's premiere, A Newport Christmas. Because this is, without a doubt, a Christmas movie unlike anything Hallmark has done to date. Thanks to a refreshing and fun plot.

Director: Dustin Rikert
Writer: Joie Botkin
Stars: Nell Bichler, Wes Brown, Jon Cesar

This story introduces us to Ella, a high-society woman living in 1905 who desires more than what life in that era offered women. She wants a legacy, she wants to live a fulfilling life where she contributes to the world, but, of course... she is expected to marry someone and follow his dictates. This prompts her to go to the nearby sea in search of clarity, and a wish she makes there is granted in a strange way. She is sent to the year 2025, where she meets Nick and discovers that she has accomplished a great deal. But if she doesn't return to her time soon, everything she has achieved will be erased by the mechanics of time. Because if she abandons that life, it will never exist, and many things will change. That means she must return to her time, and that won't be easy. Not with the feelings she's developing for Nick, and not with the knowledge that someone is waiting for her in the past to ask for her hand in marriage.

Which is... something we've never seen on this channel before. Because it's a science fiction Christmas movie, and that's definitely new for Hallmark, and, well, believe it or not, it works. Partly because a lot of care has been put into the story regarding the science fiction elements. The time travel aspect has its own rules and uses familiar concepts to execute it, which makes it comfortable and fits perfectly into the story. Furthermore, it's never complex or overwhelming, making it easy and fun to enjoy even for those who aren't science fiction fans. But for those who are, this film is a true gem and may attract even more followers. Because, quite simply, it showcases things that nerds and geeks see in Star Trek or Doctor Who, and it's a pleasure to watch, and it also lays the foundation for what turns out to be... a surprisingly profound story.

Because beneath a small temporal causality loop lies a story based on the progress we've made, how much more we need to advance, and a powerful personal journey for Ella. She embodies an ancient rite of passage, when we all pause for a moment to reflect on the direction of our lives. Where are we going, what are we doing, and who do we want to be? She confronts this in real time, with her legacy and her decisions before her, which is unique. But it does speak profoundly about life, the journey we undertake, and how the decisions we make can have a great impact on others, so we must choose wisely. These are concepts increasingly present in Hallmark Channel movies, and these two elements give rise to an enriching, fun, and captivating story.

But, of course, it has everything we love about these kinds of movies. After all, it's set at Christmas, in two different eras, and yes, there's plenty of romance. Because Nick and Ella fall in love practically at first sight, something we love in these stories, and they embark on a romantic journey. A journey that shows how matters of the heart can seem impossible to achieve when the timing doesn't seem right or when life gets in the way, and how that's a mistaken idea that can be easily overcome by committing to what we want and to whom our heart calls out to.

This gives rise to an epic and timeless love story that will satisfy anyone who watches it, and that's it... this is a Hallmark movie that truly has something for everyone. Because if you're looking for a classic romance, you'll find it. But if you want something to think about or perhaps an interesting concept to enjoy, you'll find that here too. Plus, you'll enjoy a touch of science fiction and the sincere and charming performances of Ginna Claire Mason (Ella) and Wes Brown (Nick). They both have great on-screen chemistry and perfectly convey the romance, and Ms. Mason deserves a special mention.

Heated Rivalry 2025 Tv Series Review Trailer Poster

Letterkenny veteran Jacob Tierney wrote and directed the six-part series about two rising hockey stars who fall passionately in love. Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin entered the NHL in 2005. For more than 20 years, the Canadian star and his Russian counterpart have waged one of the greatest rivalries in the sport. They've won titles, medals, and scoring crowns, and both are still playing (with the same franchises that drafted them), having earned their place among hockey's all-time elite. Creator: Jacob Tierney Stars: Hudson Williams, Connor Storrie, Callan Potter That's the underlying premise at the heart of HBO Max and Crave's new six-part romantic drama, Heated Rivalry, based on the book by Rachel Reid and written and directed by Letterkenny veteran Jacob Tierney. Don't expect many direct similarities to Letterkenny, though. Heated Rivalry may have some comedic elements, as relationships between passionate men are often entertaining, but it's a sincere a...

The Hunting Wives 2025 Tv Series Review Trailer Poster

Netflix has become a haven for shows about small towns rocked by crime. Last week, we premiered Untamed, where the residents of a town in Yosemite National Park became embroiled in a murder mystery after a girl fell from El Capitan. The show dealt heavily with grief, suicidal tendencies, abusive men, and the colonialists' negative feelings toward the Indigenous community. The Glass Dome told the story of a criminal psychologist who returned to her hometown to attend her stepmother's funeral and found herself involved in investigating a series of murders seemingly connected to her past.  Hound's Hill centered on a Polish author who returned to his hometown to come to terms with a crime he may have committed, only to discover that a serial killer is on the loose, killing the perpetrators—and his name could be next on the list. So, yes, when I watched The Hunting Wives, I completely understood why Netflix bought the rights to this show. What confuses me is, who is this series ...

Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy 2025 Movie Review Trailer POster

Despite the controversies that arose during the production and marketing phase leading up to this film's release, Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy still takes home a singular victory, and it might be the only thing that counts toward landing that second film. Back in its first web novel, Realies Pictures offered it a five-film live-action adaptation. Originally written as a light novel before being adapted into a manhwa, Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint remains a very popular series among fans and webtoon lovers. And while readers eagerly awaited the new content, concerns began to boil over when it was revealed that changes were being made to the source material that didn't make much sense.
