The mimes are there to rob the Iron Watch armored vehicle that passes through that intersection. The truck transports millions of South African rands from one place to another and is always attacked by those seeking to rob them. But the driver, a former police officer named Babalwa (Lerato Mvelase), is an expert at what she does and manages to avoid being approached by the thieves. Her boss, Zachariah (Desmond Dube), uploads the video online to generate income and gives her a well-deserved bonus.
Babalwa is loyal to her team, including her friend Tebza (S'Dumo Mtshali). She is a religious woman who attends church every Sunday with her husband Lungile (Bonko Khoza); her teenage daughter, Palesa (Ama Qamata), stays home mostly as she recovers from a cancer diagnosis. But when Palesa suffers a seizure, Babalwa and Lungile discover that the cranial surgery she needs can only be performed in a private hospital and costs 1.2 million rand.

They try to enlist the help of the church and Zachariah, but neither can, which infuriates Babalwa. So she turns to Baba G (Jerry Mofokeng), a notorious crime boss who has known Babalwa all her life and has tried to recruit her to be his spy for Iron Watch. Desperate, she finally agrees to help him steal a truck he drives in exchange for the 1.2 million rand he needs for Palesa's surgery. But she has to do it her way, much to the chagrin of Zweli (Sphamandla Dhludhu), Baba G's young and aggressive protégé.
Created by Sydney Dire, Akin Omotoso, and Steven Pillemer, Marked feels like one of those shows that takes all kinds of absurd paths, like the ones mentioned above. The idea of an otherwise virtuous person—and lately, it seems that character is always a woman—reluctantly becoming involved in crime is appealing to writers, networks, and streaming platforms alike.
The problem is that Babalwa is a religious woman, and the church is a significant part of her life. How she deals with her new life of crime, given her unwavering faith, will be an interesting aspect of this story. It will be especially interesting when things inevitably go wrong and she ends up getting involved in criminal activity that goes far beyond grand theft.
We already know that the world around Babalwa is crazy, as when Zweli meets and sleeps with Nelisa (Natasha Thahane), Zachariah's daughter, who seems to be turned on by having a loaded gun in bed with them. Tebza, who seems to be on the right track in the first episode, could also be involved in some suspicious activity. Either way, the first episode could be just the tip of the iceberg as to where this story could go.
