Unspeakable Sins, the 18-episode Netflix crime thriller, keeps you hooked thanks to its fast-paced pace and the sheer number of events and developments that occur at every turn. It's the story of the MartÃnez family, who found themselves in a mess when the patriarch, Claudio, was kidnapped by unknown assailants. It was then that the family's dark secrets began to come to light, wreaking havoc on the lives of those involved. Let's find out what happened in the first season of Unspeakable Sins, how the situation ended for the family members, and if they managed to overcome the conflicts that arose.
The MartÃnez family was probably the wealthiest and most influential in the entire Mexico City region, but that didn't mean everything was fine between them. Claudio MartÃnez, the patriarch, didn't like his son Octavio at all. He belittled him whenever he had the chance. I agree that Claudio would have had his own reasons for treating his son that way, but being the head of the family, he should have known better. Octavio felt he was worthless, and all his life he felt pressured to prove himself. Livia, on the other hand, was Claudio's favorite daughter, even though she made it very clear that she opposed her father's ideologies.

She wanted her father's company to be more ethical and moral in its approach, and to not only reduce its environmental footprint but also incorporate more sustainable practices. Helena was Claudio's second wife and had a son named Fer with another man. Fer's biological father (a politician named Rafael) had abandoned Helena, not wanting the world to know about his affair with her. Claudio wasn't a very good man; like Octavio, he treated Helena in the worst possible way. Claudio physically abused Fer on multiple occasions, and he was the one who first forced him to use drugs. Fer had become an addict, and the poor boy was in desperate need. Fer loved his mother and just wanted to find a way to get rid of Claudio and save her life.
Helena and Claudio had been accomplices, so the latter felt compelled to keep a close eye on her. Furthermore, Claudio was a domineering man and was obsessively attracted to Helena. He didn't want to let her go, and that was probably his biggest mistake. He wasn't happy with her; she definitely felt caged with him, but she still had to put up with his rude attitude, and she realized that unless she took a bold step, there would be no way out. Helena met a male escort named Iván and fell in love with him. Iván was everything Helena had ever wanted, and with his presence, she experienced a strange sense of accomplishment. She was at that stage in her life where she realized that material wealth couldn't make her happy. It was companionship she craved, and she didn't hesitate to cross all moral boundaries with Ivan. Everyone around her told her Helena couldn't be trusted, but as they say, love is blind. Ivan simply wasn't able to assess the situation logically and let his heart lead him. He was willing to take that leap of faith, knowing that if Claudio found out, he would have to face the consequences.
Helena decided to take matters into her own hands, knowing that sitting idly by and doing nothing wouldn't help her. She knew Claudio's secrets and dark fantasies, and she decided to use them against him. She told Ivan to meet with Claudio and pretend to be a journalist who wanted to write an article about him. Helena knew that Claudio was attracted to young, handsome men, and she decided to use this against him. The plan was for Ivan to make Claudio believe that she was attracted to him too.
Helena wanted to record Claudio being intimate with Iván and then use it against him. So the trap was set, and as expected, Claudio took Iván to his cabin with the intention of being intimate with him. Unfortunately, Claudio discovered that hidden cameras were installed in his bedroom and lost his composure. He attacked Iván and demanded that he reveal who the mastermind of the crime was. But then, something strange happened that night. Claudio disappeared, and no one knew if he had gone somewhere of his own free will, if he had been murdered, or if he had been kidnapped.
Antonio, Claudio's right-hand man who accompanied him at all times, was also shot, and he too had no idea what had happened to him. Obviously, Iván became the prime suspect, but it soon became clear that he had nothing to do with Claudio's disappearance. SofÃa, the police officer in charge of the case, long believed that Iván and Helena had murdered Claudio together, but the story wasn't as simple as it seemed. We learned that Antonio, Claudio's head of security, had kidnapped him, and although he had his own reasons for torturing him, he wasn't acting alone.
Antonio's father had dedicated his entire life to serving the MartÃnez family, and Claudio never treated him with respect. Besides, Antonio liked Livia and was already imagining a life with her. Livia entertained Antonio; he liked her too, but I don't think she would have ever considered marrying him or running away with him. Soon SofÃa and her subordinate, BernÃtez, discovered that Antonio was up to something. They tracked his movements and found out where he was keeping Claudio.
Meanwhile, Octavio was in a bind, as his father's business partner, Magic, had lent Claudio a large sum of money. Magic believed Octavio had something to do with Claudio's disappearance, but he soon discovered that wasn't true. Magic had a plan to get his money back. He asked Octavio to fake his father's death so the board of directors would unfreeze his accounts and allow him access. Octavio found himself in a difficult situation, as he had announced to the world that his father had been murdered and had even organized a proper funeral. But then Claudio was rescued by Sofia, and the world was shocked.
The blame, obviously, fell on Octavio, and people believed he wanted his father dead, so he spread the lies about his death. Octavio knew he couldn't make others understand how Magic had blackmailed him. For a long time, no one knew that Phaedra, a woman who belonged to Claudius's elite circle, was behind the kidnapping. Phaedra was the one who allowed Ivan to get his clients. She treated Ivan like her son, probably because she wanted to fill the void left in her life by her son's death.
Phaedra's son, Ariel, loved Claudius and desperately longed for a future with him. Claudius also felt sympathy for the boy, but had no intention of making their relationship public or being with him. Claudius threatened Ariel with leaving him alone if he didn't want his compromising videos leaked. Ariel didn't know how to cope, and his grief drove him to commit suicide. Phaedra always blamed Claudius for the loss and wanted revenge, so she kidnapped Claudius and made him suffer. In addition to orchestrating the entire kidnapping, Phaedra also took the video recordings Claudius had with him, which showed some very influential people in town indulging in their sexual fantasies. He knew that if he leaked the videos, the blame would fall on Helena and Claudio, and their lives would be ruined. Fedra's daughter, Ximena, was also part of the plan and helped her mother in every way possible.
Claudio's first wife, Cristina, had died under mysterious circumstances, and although Helena's involvement was doubted, there was no concrete evidence to prove her guilt. So, at that time, Claudio began dating Helena, and although he maintained a strictly professional relationship with her, Cristina knew what her husband was capable of. One day, Cristina argued with Helena, and things escalated. Fer, who was quite young at the time, ran over Cristina with his bicycle, and she accidentally fell off the porch and died from her injuries.
Helena knew that even if neither she nor her son intended to kill her, people wouldn't believe a word they said. That's when Claudio arrived and discovered what had happened. He decided to throw Cristina's body into the lake to make it look like an accident or suicide. Cristina was very drunk when she hurt herself, so even the medical reports failed to find any incriminating evidence proving Fer and Helena's guilt.
Surprisingly, Claudio had recorded the entire act. The man had a habit of recording these kinds of things, knowing he could later use them to influence people. He had an underground basement where he used to invite politicians and other influential people to satisfy his twisted sexual fantasies. They believed it was a safe place, but they didn't know they were being recorded. Helena knew this, having discovered the control room from which Claudio monitored everyone. Claudio used the recording of Cristina's death to force her to stay with him. He forced her to leave Iván, and she had no choice because she didn't want to ruin her son's life. So, to answer the question, Helena didn't kill Cristina, but the situation was such that, if Claudio wanted, he could blame her and Fer for everything.
Fedra and Ximena couldn't keep their secret hidden for long. They had compromising videos in their possession and leaked them one by one, completely ruining the lives of those in them. The first victim was prosecutor Pablo. His video was leaked, and his life changed completely. Arcadia, his wife, was a very orthodox woman and couldn't believe her husband was involved in such unethical activity. Pablo felt it was Helena who had leaked the video, so he went to confront her. In a fit of rage, Pablo pulled the trigger, and Helena was seriously injured.
He knew the consequences and didn't want to bear the shame. So he ended up committing suicide in Helena's office, and his wife, Arcadia, simply couldn't accept the situation. Helena was in the hospital when another video was leaked, and it was then that it became clear that she wasn't responsible. Ivan learned of Fedra's involvement by breaking into their house and watching his own video with Helena on Fedra's laptop. Ivan had every reason to believe it was Fedra who had kidnapped Claudio. Phaedra treated Ivan like her own son and didn't want him to suffer the consequences of what he did. But, directly or indirectly, his life was also affected, and she couldn't do anything about it. Phaedra wanted to keep Octavian close and gain his trust, knowing she could use him as a pawn in the near future.
Octavian had had a fight with his father, and Phaedra was smart enough to know she could take advantage of the situation. But in the process, she fell in love with Octavian. He was her son's age, and she knew their relationship could become problematic later, but she couldn't control her feelings. After spending a night at Phaedra's house, Octavian found a hidden camera in the bedroom. Phaedra had planted it when he first met her, but she had no intention of using the recording once she realized she had fallen in love with him. Obviously, Octavian had a hard time believing her after seeing the hidden camera. With the information Ivan and Octavian had obtained, Phaedra's identity was exposed. Even Claudio found out what she was up to and threatened to kill her if she didn't hand over the videos. Meanwhile, Livia sent Arcadia an anonymous message telling her that Phaedra had leaked the video of her husband.
Arcadia, unable to control her emotions, arrived at Phaedra's house in a rage and shot her. Although Phaedra survived the attack, her daughter, Ximena, died trying to save her. Arcadia was found guilty and imprisoned. Phaedra was accused of leaking those videos, although the court could find no evidence directly linking her to Claudio's kidnapping. In the finale of Unspeakable Sins, someone broke into Claudio's house and slit his throat. Claudio did not survive the attack, and news of the hotel magnate's murder spread like wildfire. Claudio had many enemies, so Sofia and the entire police department had multiple suspects while investigating the case. But it was revealed that neither Fedra nor Octavio had anything to do with the murder, as it was Helena who killed him.
The man threatened Helena with leaking the video where Fer ran over Cristina with a bicycle. He blackmailed her using that video and told her she should leave Iván and come live with him. Helena found it hard to believe; she loved Iván and simply couldn't forget him. Besides, she wanted to protect her son, so she decided to make the decision. Iván had no idea, but then Helena told him everything. That's when he became part of the plan and helped Helena get rid of the murder weapon.
Meanwhile, after the deaths of Magic and Antonio at the hands of Claudius, Magic's men constantly pursued Octavian, seeking revenge for their boss's death. One day, Magic's right-hand man, known as the Lawyer, broke into Octavian's house with the intention of killing him. Livia was also with Octavian at the time. Octavian somehow managed to overpower the lawyer and killed him to save her life. Octavian was completely certain that it was the lawyer who had murdered his father, and the authorities, lacking other evidence, chose to believe him.
So Helena and Ivan didn't have to go to great lengths to cover their tracks or find a way out, and simply let the story unfold on its own. Helena went to see Phaedra once it was all over, in prison. She told her that she had avenged her son's death and had made sure Claudius suffered in those final moments. Phaedra felt satisfied, even though her revenge wasn't over yet. He used his contacts to have Arcadia transferred to his cell phone and decided to teach him a lesson for murdering his daughter. Ivan and Helena decided to start over and move to Los Angeles with their children.
The first season of Unspeakable Sins ended abruptly, making it clear that Ivan and Helena were not out of danger, as someone was watching them. Ivan had a wife named Rebecca, and for a long time Helena didn't know about her. Ivan had no intention of cheating on her, but believed he would tell her about Rebecca when the time came. Rebecca and Ivan's marriage had fallen apart, and Ivan had no intention of being with her. Rebecca had a son with another man, and Ivan had grown very fond of him.
He cared for the boy like his own and wanted to be there for him, as he shared a very close bond with him. Fer also learned that his biological father was a politician named Rafael. Had Rafael wanted, he would have chosen not to speak to Fer, but he wanted to make things right with his son. He knew he'd been a terrible father, but he wanted to change that. Fer and Rafael's relationship improved dramatically, and they decided to stay in touch. Iván and Helena moved into their new house and were very happy with how things had gone. Iván was able to meet his son, and Helena knew Fer was healing inside.
But then another twist came at the end of the first season of Unspeakable Sins. There was a hidden camera in Iván and Helena's room, and someone was watching them. After all, they would have thought they were out of trouble, but they weren't. Claudio had messed with the wrong crowd, so it could be one of his enemies, someone affected by Magic's death. Maybe it was someone close to Antonio who wanted revenge on Iván and Helena. But I have a feeling it was someone close to Helena and Iván, someone they didn't expect to betray their trust. Perhaps someone saw Helena when she went to kill Claudio and wanted to take advantage of the situation. If there's a second season, we might find out who this person was and what he wanted from Ivan and Helena. I think Ivan and Helena's dreams of a normal life will soon be shattered, and they'll find themselves trapped in a dangerous situation once again.
