The finale of Los Cazadores de Gringos revolved around the confrontation between Secretary of Security Ortega and the suspended officers of the International Liaison Unit, Nico and Archi. Nico and Archi were part of a team that also included Cri, Beto, and Gloria. Their boss was Temo. Their main task was to catch American criminals residing illegally in Mexico and deport them back to their country. One of the profiles Temo obtained was that of Father Terry. But instead of sending him to the United States, Temo discovered some uncomfortable truths about Sueños Sin Fronteras, Father Murphy, JoaquÃn, and Ortega.
Before Temo could tell Nico everything, he was murdered. Although Nico and his team were not authorized to investigate the matter, and despite being busy with all sorts of criminal cases, they worked together secretly to avenge Temo. Ortega did his best to prevent this. He brought his niece, Camila, into the team to serve as his eyes and ears. He tarnished Temo's name by portraying him as a compulsive gambler in the media. And, as mentioned, he suspended Nico and Archi for quite legitimate reasons (Nico had stolen Temo's phone from the crime scene, and Archi was a recreational drug user), but mainly to prevent them from discovering something he wanted to keep hidden.
Stars: Manuel Masalva, Hector Kotsifakis, Andrew Leland Rogers
I should clarify something about the narrative of The Gringo Hunters: it has a main plot and many subplots. The main plot intertwines with these subplots until the tenth episode. In episodes 11 and 12, we see the big picture. Still, this big picture is rather blurry because, at this point, the show thinks it's given enough information to piece together the puzzle and, at the same time, is panicking about not having time to say what it wants to say coherently.
With all this in mind, I'll try to explain the series finale as best I can. I believe that, originally, the trafficking of minors by Sueños Sin Fronteras and the kidnapping of Mariana, Luisa and JoaquÃn's daughter, by the Mochadedos were not really related. The kidnapping occurred in 2009, and Murphy's practice of trafficking minors was relatively recent, so the two cases overlapped. In 2009, a criminal gang called the Mochadedos kidnapped Mariana with the aim of extorting money from JoaquÃn, since he was wealthy.
However, the Mochadedos had likely been hired by Ortega because he wanted a promotion. Ideally, JoaquÃn would have paid the ransom, the Mochadedos would have shared the money with Ortega after handing Mariana over to him, and Ortega would have handed Mariana over to JoaquÃn and Luisa, earning himself all kinds of praise. However, during the exchange, one of the gang members took Mariana out without the blindfold, and she saw what was happening between Ortega and the Mochadedos.
Incidentally, it's impossible to say that as soon as Mariana saw Ortega with the Mochadedos, she assumed they were conspiring. She was probably so traumatized that she just wanted to get out of there. Perhaps she didn't even care that a police officer and a gang were working together to extort her father. Nevertheless, Ortega decided to kill Mariana and all the Mochadedos members present in the building where the exchange was taking place. After that, the cover-up began. Right after the shooting, documents from the internal investigation began to disappear, proving that Ortega had been instrumental in Mariana's death.
Temo, who was Ortega's partner at the time, didn't believe the story Ortega was selling. Ortega insisted that they should be hailed as heroes for Baja California's progress. While Temo clung to his position, another police officer, Armando, refused to accept the lies being spread and stole some of those incriminating documents before being suspended. For the next two decades, Ortega likely continued to flatter the rich and powerful, specifically JoaquÃn, and became Secretary of Security.
Meanwhile, Temo worked on the formation of the International Liaison Unit. I assume it was during this period that Father Murphy entered the picture. I'm not sure if Murphy was always involved in child trafficking. It's possible he started by creating shelters for homeless children in Tijuana, but when he stopped receiving the funding he needed to keep his humanitarian work alive, he "sacrificed" those innocent children to white people in the United States under the guise of sending them for adoption.
