The Better Sister feels, for the most part, like a miniseries with a central mystery that needs to be resolved by the end of the series. But what we're left with at the end of the eight episodes is one mystery solved, but a dozen more left to unravel, making us wish the show would come back.
If you read our review, you'll know the series isn't really the best mystery thriller in terms of being sensationalized or stressful, but it's still an addictive murder mystery that's disgustingly binge-worthy. So, with that being said, it wouldn't be surprising if it were renewed for a second season with more drama, more Gone Girl vibes, and clichés that don't feel overdone.
Stars: Elizabeth Banks, Jessica Biel, Corey Stoll
Season 1 introduced us to estranged sisters Chloe and Nicky, who have been living apart for years because of one man (yuck), Adam, who is currently married to Chloe. However, he did have a child with Nicky, and Ethan now calls his aunt "his mom" and his mom "his mom," because that's what Adam did to them. The series begins with Adam's murder and makes us wonder who could have done it. The answer is there if you look closely from a certain point: Nicky did it, but Chloe and Ethan also ended up covering it up to protect the family. The point, in any case, is that it was always meant to be the three of them, Ethan and his two abnormal mothers, because they truly understand each other and know how to support each other. So, of course, at the end of the series, Chloe and Nicky do their best to keep it that way, reciting the prayer they always said as children at the end of the series to symbolize their solidarity and unity. That they have now escaped their trauma because they are together. But what does the future hold for the sisters? Let's take a few guesses.
In the last two minutes of "Best Sister," Jake's body washes up on the shore. How did he end up dead? Who killed him, and why? We have no answers. We only know that the sisters are syncing up their alibis and that Michelle Sanders has come looking for Jake for some reason. We know the Gentry Group are the big villains of the show, but we haven't met anyone who works there yet. The most obvious answer to "Who killed Jake?" is the Gentry Group, but then there's Agent Olivero, who had a falling out with him just now, and there's also Chloe, who has to put herself first and protect her family, even if it means throwing Jake overboard. I don't know about you, but I think she might have done it to keep them safe, even if she liked Jake at one point, and she doesn't seem like a cold-blooded killer. Also, what did Michelle want with Jake? Were they finally going to start dating? Well, I guess not, but it's funny that she showed up at that moment, which means they could have been planning something together.
Jake wasn't a bad guy at all. I don't know why he got caught in this crossfire, especially after Chloe made it seem like he might have killed Adam to save Ethan, and he didn't even react. So I guess the only real answer is that this is the work of the Gentry Group. They'll soon be after Chloe too.
Chloe publicly had Bill arrested and staged everything perfectly to make it look like he killed Adam, but this doesn't really protect her from the Gentry Group or Olivero. So Chloe files a sexual harassment complaint against Olivero because he said something inappropriate to her when they met in his car. This might help Chloe for a while, but I don't think it will protect her much, and Olivero will come after her. He could become the big antagonist of season two. I hope Chloe doesn't try to keep tabs on the Gentry Group's business, but if she does, she'll be surrounded by both sides, making herself an easy target. Olivero also had a partner, so I wonder if he'll come back and get Chloe into trouble.
I think the only way for Chloe and Nicky to become powerful now is to write that book and make their whole story public. That will give them a lot of power and money, protecting them from people like Bill. Also, even though it might not seem like it, Catherine is a good person in my opinion, so I think it will make them a lot of money and keep them on their toes. I can't imagine Ethan and Nicky going to Ohio now, since Bill has been arrested and everyone is safe in the city, and Nicky can't be arrested for Adam's murder. I'm guessing Ethan wanted some time away from the house where he found his father murdered. He'll probably go off to college, and he's still a little angry at Chloe for choosing Adam over Nicky, but they're all good now.
I don't think Ethan is going to be a bad kid. Sure, he had a rough childhood, and now he knows his father drugged his mother to ensure they'd separate. I think he's resistant to the idea that he could end up like his father, so he'll do everything he can to avoid ending up like him.
