In Secrets of the Penguins, the latest installment of National Geographic's Emmy-winning "Secrets of the Penguins" franchise, viewers are taken to the most remote corners of the world to witness penguin behavior captured on film for the first time. Featuring award-winning Nat Geo explorer Bertie Gregory, the series showcases these adorable, fluffy flightless birds as they face some of the planet's most extreme environments. Narrated by Blake Lively (Another Simple Favor), the three-part series premieres on April 22, 2025, at 6:00 PM (CAT) on National Geographic Wild (DStv 182, StarSat 221), and all episodes will be available to stream on April 21, 2025, on Disney+ in South Africa.
While many documentaries have explored penguins, Secrets of the Penguins takes them to a whole new level. The team, comprised of more than 70 world-renowned scientists and filmmakers, embarked on a two-year adventure across the globe, from the rocky beaches of Cape Town and the icy shores of South Georgia Island to the tropical Galapagos and the desert caves of Namibia, capturing penguins like never before.
Star: Bertie Gregory
Pushing the boundaries of wildlife filming, a three-person crew endured an astonishing 274 days of filming on Antarctica's Ekström Ice Shelf, home to a colony of 20,000 emperor penguins. Faced with one of the harshest environments on the planet, they captured never-before-seen moments, such as a pair of emperor penguins practicing egg transfers with a snowball to hone their skills for the moment they would need to transfer a real egg, tenacious chicks navigating the unstable ice amid climate change, and young penguins using their beaks to climb out of a crevasse.
With stunning, award-winning cinematography and cutting-edge camera technology, Secrets of the Penguins captures even more unique and unseen moments in the wild. For the first time, observe healthy "rockaroni" chicks—a rare hybrid between rockhopper and macaroni penguins—offering a fascinating glimpse into their evolutionary and adaptive potential. Other notable scenes include a brave rockhopper penguin fending off a southern sea lion, the first footage of an African penguin colony hiding in a cave, and cunning Galapagos penguins teaming up for a daring heist: stealing fish directly from pelicans' beaks and skillfully herding sardine bait balls.
This family-friendly series draws on the passion and expertise of world-renowned scientists and conservationists, including National Geographic Explorer and marine biologist Dr. Pablo Borboroglu, conservation biologist Dr. Michelle LaRue, African penguin expert Dr. Andrea Thiebault, veterinarian Dr. Gustavo Jiménez Uzcátegui, penguin expert Dr. Jessica Kemper, and marine biologist Dr. Katta Ludynia.
Emperor penguins are the largest and strongest, living in the coldest and most extreme environments on Earth. Embedded in an Antarctic colony, National Geographic Explorer Bertie Gregory uncovers never-before-filmed social skills, discovering that the bonds forged from birth between family, friends, and strangers can mean the difference between life and death.
Millions of years ago, a group of penguins left the ice, riding powerful currents and reaching strange new lands. They redefined the traditions of deserts and tropics, and even coexistence with humans. Subjected to extreme tests, they became perhaps the smartest penguins of all. National Geographic Explorer Bertie Gregory discovers penguins' ability to solve problems, talk, and constantly seek out new worlds.
It takes a special kind of brave penguin to survive the fierce Southern Ocean, but 40 million penguins populate its isolated, rocky refuges, and they are some of the most successful penguins on Earth. National Geographic Explorer Bertie Gregory follows rockhopper, gentoo, and macaroni penguins to discover a world of bold people, rebels, and unconventional parents.
Previous seasons of "Secrets of" include "Secrets of the Octopus," narrated by Paul Rudd; "Secrets of the Elephants," narrated by Natalie Portman; and the Emmy-winning "Secrets of the Whales," narrated by Sigourney Weaver. All episodes are currently available on Disney+.
