Journey to You is an entertaining Hallmark movie that has everything you'd expect from a Hallmark movie, but with added religious elements.
The film follows Monica (Erin Cahill), an ER nurse practitioner, who has completely dedicated herself to her job and prides herself on never taking vacations. Her new boss has a different perspective and encourages her to take some time off, as it will help reenergize her. At her mother's urging, Monica travels to Spain to join a pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago, just as her parents did years before. Equipped with the last gift she received from her late father—a devotional with Scripture passages and daily suggestions to guide her and clear her mind—Monica begins to appreciate the slower, more leisurely pace of the Camino.
Stars: Erin Cahill, Solal Bellaiche, Pamela Field
She forges relationships with her fellow pilgrims, including Luis (Eric Valdez), a divorced father traveling with his teenage son and his father. As the Camino progresses, Monica embarks on a journey of self-discovery that brings her closer to God and helps her understand what she truly wants in life. As she reaches the end of this journey, Monica discovers something surprising about her parents' pilgrimage, something that will profoundly impact her as she begins her life after the Camino.
The film is set on the Camino de Santiago, a Catholic pilgrimage in Spain that leads to the shrine of Saint James the Apostle. The location and landscapes are beautiful and help us appreciate and enter the journey that accompanies Monica, Luis, and their family.
The plot is very similar to Hallmark movies: it's entertaining, has humor, and, of course, romance, but it also has a special depth. Because it's set as a pilgrimage, there's an element of faith; we see the characters talk about God and pray. Although the faith element is a small part of the film and we would have liked it to go a little deeper, it encourages us to reflect on our spiritual walk with Christ and also encourages us to let go of the things that weigh us down, to let go of those things that stand in the way of our relationship with Jesus.
