Kochan had already undergone chemotherapy, a bilateral mastectomy, radiation therapy, and breast reconstruction when she was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer. Knowing this meant her diagnosis was terminal, Kochan embarked on the adventure of a lifetime: she left her husband and dedicated herself to exploring her sexuality in her later years, which she documented in a podcast also called Dying for Sex.

The idea for the podcast, which documented and analyzed nearly 200 of Kochan's adventures, came about in 2018, when the couple met for lunch after two dates Kochan had already gone on that morning. Eventually released by Wondery in 2020, a year after Kochan's death, the six-episode podcast quickly became a hit and has since been downloaded five million times.

The podcast synopsis reads: "As the truth unfolds, we discover that Molly isn't just dealing with breast cancer: she's also dealing with some trauma from her past." Throughout the journey, the friends explore larger themes that affect us all, such as healing, forgiveness, and what we do with the time we have left.
"Sexually, we were struggling before cancer hit," Kochan said of her marriage in an episode of the podcast. "Right before I was diagnosed, I was looking to revitalize our sex life... and then cancer happened."
Kochan's memoir, Screw Cancer: Becoming Whole, was also published in 2020, a year after her death at age 45. A notable admirer of Kochan's was New Girl creator Elizabeth Meriwether, who, along with Boyer, adapted it into a television series.
Dying for Sex will premiere on Disney+ on April 4.
