The end of Maggie and Negan's rescue mission set the stage for the second season of The Walking Dead: Dead City, proving that the TWD spin-off, starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan, has much more to tell. The very premise of Dead City—a trip to Manhattan to rescue Maggie's son—gave the impression that a six-episode story was all The Walking Dead spin-off needed. Now that the first season is over, it's clear that Maggie and Negan's journey through Manhattan is meant to be much more than a miniseries.
The finale of The Walking Dead: Dead City seemed to be setting up for what looked like a bloody fight between its heroes and its villain, the Croat. Instead, the series took a surprising direction by pitting its two protagonists against each other. No fight with the Croat was necessary, as the Dead City villain surprisingly kept his word and allowed Maggie to walk free with Herschel in tow. Negan, on the other hand, stayed with the Croatian and his boss, thus paving the way for more stories when The Walking Dead: Dead City returns for its second season.

After nearly a year of teasers and first looks, the latest news finally confirms the premiere date for The Walking Dead: Dead City's second season. The spin-off's long-awaited return is slated for Sunday, May 4, 2025, and the news was revealed through a full scene from the upcoming season. The first scene of the new season begins with a walker shuffling through Manhattan before being killed and thrown into the back of a garbage truck. The truck's drivers then arrive at a facility where the dead walkers are placed in a vat of liquid and converted into energy to power the city.
During The Walking Dead panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2023, it was confirmed that AMC has officially greenlit a second season of The Walking Dead: Dead City. As the season 1 finale of The Walking Dead: Dead City suggested, Maggie and Negan will have at least one more season to resolve their conflict. Details were scarce for most of 2023 and 2024, but now AMC has scheduled the Dead City season 2 premiere for Sunday, May 4, 2025.
In addition to Lauren Cohan (Maggie) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Negan), Dead City will also bring back Mahina Napolean (Ginny). While there's no official confirmation on the return of other cast members for Dead City season 2, it's safe to assume that Gauis Armstrong (Perlie) and Željko Ivanek (The Croat) will remain as series regulars, as both characters are among the few who survived Dead City's first episode. Additionally, The Dama, played by Lisa Emery, is emerging as a major antagonist. Newcomer Kim Coates joined the second season as Bruegel, a gang leader.
The season 1 finale laid the groundwork for the next Dead City story. Assuming Negan accepts the Lady's offer to lead her forces in the takeover of Manhattan, he's positioned to reprise his role as the leader of a ruthless gang and perhaps become even stronger. His new role lays the groundwork for Negan and Maggie to be on opposing sides for most of The Walking Dead: Dead City's second season, even if Negan's motivations are complicated by the Lady's threats.
Early trailers for the second season give the impression that Negan's takeover has been a success, and that he will wield power through power. At some point, the baseball-bat-wielding thug manages to restore power to a portion of the city, giving him a source of control not found in previous incarnations of the Walking Dead franchise.
During the series' panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, a short trailer for The Walking Dead: Dead City's second season was revealed. Narrated by several characters from the second season, the trailer shows Negan's reunion with Lucille, the infamous baseball bat, and establishes Maggie's mission to rescue him from his evil ways. Through several short clips, the trailer also reveals the return of The Croat, The Lady, and Kim Coates' new character, Bruegel.
Months after the release of the first trailer, a second one appeared in October 2024. The final glimpse of The Walking Dead: Dead City's second season features dialogue from several characters discussing their return to Manhattan following the events of the first season. Maggie appears shocked to discover that Negan has somehow risen to power, before the anti-hero reveals that "power equals power" as Radio City Music Hall suddenly comes to life.
