Shonda Rhimes returns with a new Netflix series, this time transporting us back to the White House for a murder mystery.
Based on the book of the same name by Kate Anderson Brower, the new eight-episode series follows eccentric detective Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba) who is called to the White House to solve a murder that occurred during a state dinner.
Creator: Paul William Davies
Stars: Uzo Aduba, Barrett Foa, Edwina Findley
With the help of FBI Special Agent Edwin Park, played by Randall Park, star of "Always Be My Maybe," Cordelia embarks on a mission to discover who is responsible for the crime.
Netflix has shared a new sneak peek of the series, starring Uzo Aduba, Isiah Whitlock Jr., and Kylie Minogue (yes, you read that right).
In the video, Cordelia converses with Police Chief Larry Dokes and asks him to "stop anyone from talking to me."
Dokes asks, "Anyone," to which she replies, "Most people. People in need. I don't have time."
"How about, say, Kylie Minogue?" Dokes asks, before the pop singer enters the kitchen.
The Residence cast includes Uzo Aduba, who stars as Detective Cordelia Cupp. Aduba is known for playing Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren in Orange Is the New Black.
Talking about her new role, she commented, "What makes Cordelia a part of Shondaland's roster of heroines is her strength, her candor, and her unapologetic nature. While other characters in The Residence might think the looming mystery is unsolvable, Cordelia sees a puzzle worth solving. This case is unsolvable for everyone except Cordelia Cupp."
The Residence introduces a brilliant detective sworn into the White House to solve a murder in which all the guests and staff at the state dinner are suspects.
The official synopsis reads: “132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective. One disastrous state dinner. The Residence is a zany whodunit set on the upper, lower, and back floors of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world’s most famous mansion.”
The Residence, written by Paul William Davies, best known for his work on Scandal with Rhimes, joins Shondaland’s ever-growing Netflix slate, which includes the hit period drama Bridgerton, its spin-off about Queen Charlotte, and Rhimes’ previously released miniseries, Inventing Anna.
“The Residence is, honestly, many things,” Davies said. "It's funny, suspenseful, witty, sometimes completely absurd, sometimes genuinely romantic. As a murder mystery, I think what truly makes it original and unique is Cordelia Cupp. She's simply special."
