Survival of the Thickest 2025 Tv Series Season 2 Review Trailer Poster

Netflix has renewed “Survival of the Thickest” for a second season and ordered a comedy special from co-creator and star Michelle Buteau.

“Survival of the Thickest” is based on Buteau’s essay collection of the same name. According to the synopsis, the series “centers on Mavis Beaumont (Buteau). Black, plus-size, and newly single (not by choice!), Mavis is forced to rebuild her life as a struggling hairstylist. She’s determined not only to survive, but to thrive with the support of her chosen family, a body-positive attitude, and a cute V-neck with lip gloss.”

Stars: Michelle Buteau, Tone Bell, Marouane Zotti

In addition to Buteau, the cast includes Tone Bell as Khalil and Tasha Smith as Marley, with Garcelle Beauvais, Michelle Visage, and other actresses in supporting roles.

Danielle Sanchez-Witzel co-created “Survival of the Thickest” and serves as showrunner. She and Buteau serve as executive producers alongside Linda Mendoza, Ravi Nandan, and Alli Reich of A24, and Anne Hong of Mosaic. In addition to Buteau and Sanchez-Witzel, writers include Grace Edwards, Ian Edwards, Solomon Georgio, ER Fightmaster, Hillary Handlesman, and Julia Lindon. Mendoza, Kim Nguyen, Amy Aniobi, and Kimmy Gatewood direct the episodes.

The series received seven NAACP Award nominations, including for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Comedy Actress, Outstanding Comedy Writer, and Outstanding Television Creator.

The second season and upcoming comedy special continue Buteau's relationship with Netflix, where she starred in the 2020 comedy special "Michelle Buteau: Welcome to Buteaupia." She has also starred in the Netflix series "Tales of the City" and the film "Always Be My Maybe," and has hosted the unscripted series "The Circle" and "Barbecue Showdown."
