“Novocaine” is a reminder that spring is coming and we are coming out of the period where movies are not expected to be big hits, but potentially the biggest of the year, with movies like “Novocaine” as a warm-up.
For most of Nathan’s life, he has had to live safe. Unable to feel pain, he has been immensely sheltered and cautious, even living on a liquid diet for fear of biting his tongue. However, while working at San Diego Trust Bank, as an assistant manager, he finds himself attracting the attention of one of the tellers, Sherry.
Directors: Dan Berk, Robert Olsen
Writer: Lars Jacobson
Stars: Jack Quaid, Amber Midthunder, Ray Nicholson
She is nice, interested in him, and even though he is shy and awkward, there is something about him. The fact that he feels no pain ends up being a hook, but the fact that he accepts his own scars and struggles is what makes it almost become love at first sight. So Nathan, who has been single most of his life, when the bank is robbed and Sherry is taken hostage, decides to save her and drag his only friend, whom he has never met but plays online games with, Roscoe, to help him, even though Roscoe makes it clear that he is a snitch.
Nathan Caine is a bank manager at San Diego Trust and has not lived a life like that of a bubble boy, but something that certainly resembles it. Because he has an ailment that prevents him from feeling pain, whether through external simulation or the need to urinate, Nathan has a regimen to stay alive and has done so until he is 30 years old.
But, with routine and security, Nathan has not really lived, but it seems that Sherry will soon change that.
“Sherry (Amber Midthunder)”, Novocaine (2025), directed by Dan Berk, Robert Olsen (Paramount Pictures).
Sherry is someone who hasn't had the best life, and the scars she has to show how she once handled it exhibit her struggles. But, as of now, life is better. She may not have many friends or family, but she has peace and a support group for when things get noticeably tough.
Roscoe is Nathan's playmate who he hasn't met before the events of the film, and when he meets Roscoe, he's nothing like how he described himself.
Simon is positioned as the leader of the bank robbers, but if you talked to the brothers he's working with, he may have taken the lead, but he's not their leader. Even if Simon is a key part of the heist, because of what he brings to the table to get things done.
When it comes to Amber Midthunder as Sherry, she's not a basic love interest in an action movie. Thankfully, she's given the kind of layers to make you personally invested in her, rather than just being Nate's motivation. So when you see them leaving, she encourages him to try something as small as cherry pie and start living and not just surviving. You don't just love her for him, you care about who she is.
When Sherry talks about her past and shows off her scars, you see a level of vulnerability that not many love interests can genuinely afford. Which makes everything that happens from the kidnapping and after all the more noteworthy.
