During the finale of Tyler Perry's Duplicity, a disheartened Marley talks about how the story never revolves around a single case, and merit should never be negated by a single situation or deceitful person. In the film, Marley plays a lawyer whose best friend and her husband are having a hard time getting along lately. In fact, she's very close to Rodney, so she tells his wife, Fela, she'll help them get their spark back. Marley is with a man named Tony, whom Fela introduced her to. They seem close, but Marley doesn't seem comfortable with the subject of marriage. Much later, we discover that her ex has betrayed her so much that she can no longer fully trust anyone. Still, she gets caught up in this crazy drama that unfolds much later in Duplicity. That said, let's delve into the film and who really killed Rodney.
After breakfast with Marley, Tony, and Fela, Rodney goes for his usual run. He apparently runs gyms and is basically a fitness trainer, but he's not doing well, which is why Fela is upset, but Marley knows nothing about this. While running, Rodney has his music playing loudly in his headphones.

He slows down in an area he doesn't usually frequent and enters a house where he hasn't been seen before. The white woman who lives near that house receives an anonymous call from a supposed neighbor saying there's a Black man in her back alley and that he might be breaking into the house next door. Without questioning the situation, the woman immediately calls the police.
Elsewhere, rookie cop Caleb is told he's teaming up with Kevin, an officer who's usually in a different jurisdiction. Caleb fears he's done something wrong, but Kevin assures him everything is fine. All of this information is important because it becomes relevant later. So, when the woman calls the police, Kevin and Caleb are nearby and head to the scene. Before they arrive, Kevin tells Caleb that if he says "gun," he should shoot without hesitation.
Rodney leaves the house with his headphones on, and Caleb tells him to stay still. Rodney reaches into his pocket to pull out his phone and turn off the music, but Kevin yells "Gun!" and Caleb shoots him twice in the chest. Kevin claims it's because he thought the phone looked like a gun. Caleb, on the other hand, does everything he can to keep him alive. As you can imagine, despite calling 911, Rodney ends up dead, and Fela is left alone with all her debt to pay off. But she has Marley, the best lawyer in town, who will get her everything she needs to survive this difficult time.
It turns out Rodney had been cheating on Fela. Fela is a journalist and has a couple of very kind colleagues. These colleagues are the ones investigating the case and giving Marley this information. I guess she was also doing terrible at her job, so she was generally a mess before she died. This, of course, doesn't justify murder. On the other hand, these guys also find information that Caleb got into a fight with a Black man while in the army and called him racial slurs. So, despite Rodney's bad reputation, which is eventually revealed to the public, Marley believes she has a solid case. Furthermore, due to the political climate at the time, people began protesting because an innocent man was murdered.
About four months later, while Marley is investigating the case, she is kidnapped. It was Caleb, his Black wife, and the woman Rodney was dating who kidnapped her. Marley has been working tirelessly on the case, but Fela hasn't spoken to her in four months, plus she moved out and didn't even tell him. Returning to the kidnapping, Caleb reveals himself to Marley and tells her she should investigate Kevin. You see, the woman Rodney was dating before was with Kevin. When she broke up with him, Kevin started stalking her. So, of course, when she started dating Rodney, he didn't like it. Caleb begs Marley to listen to his side of the story because his life will be completely ruined if he is wrongly framed. Rodney's (or Kevin's) girlfriend tells Marley that there was a house Kevin often rented where she had hidden a tape recorder. She gives Marley the address, but Marley doesn't seem to have changed her mind about the situation at that point.
On the other hand, Marley has distanced herself from Tony because she knew Rodney had been unfaithful. She kept that information from Marley despite it being key to the case, which infuriated her. So she's been sleeping on the couch ever since. But somehow, when Marley shows up at the house Kevin had previously rented, Tony finds her there, and she finds him even more suspicious.
