Jimmy Warden's Borderline, starring Ray Nicholson and Samara Weaving, is an entertaining comedy thriller where you never know what's going to happen next. I must admit that watching Jack Nicholson's son perfectly portray a psychopathic killer was strangely satisfying. The film is funny; it has gory parts and is unexpectedly emotional.
Set in 1990s Los Angeles, Borderline is about a man named Paul Duerson and his obsession with a pop star, Sofia. Let's get one thing straight: Paul is obsessed with the idea of Sofia, not the person herself. He was madly in love with a pop star, and according to him, they'd been together for a while; they knew everything about each other, and were at that stage in their relationship where proposing marriage was the obvious thing to do. The only problem was that the real Sofia had no idea who he was.

It makes us feel Paul's delirium when he proposed to William, Sofia's bodyguard, believing him to be Sofia. He felt a compulsive need to propose, and his vivid imagination made the whole process easier. But shortly after William accepted the proposal, just to calm him down, Paul stabbed him with a dagger. He then broke into Sofia's house and partied hard before calling the police and confessing to the crime. Paul was said to have lost his sanity when his girlfriend suddenly died during one of Sofia's concerts. He replaced his grief and pain with a deranged obsession. It was almost as if Sofia had to pay the price for his girlfriend's death by loving him at her worst.
William survived the incident, but his daughter wanted him to find a new job. William assumed they were out of danger, as Paul was in a psychiatric institution. But he got a surprise. Paul wanted to marry Sofia, and to carry out his plan, he had to escape from the hospital. He didn't escape alone; he was accompanied by another patient, Penny, who suffered from severe mental problems and took great pleasure in killing people.
JH, a longtime trusted friend of Paul's, organized the wedding ceremony. Paul had asked him to bring him a package and also a suspicious trunk. Shortly after news of Paul and Penny's escape from the psychiatric hospital hit the TV news, they joined JH for a night full of adventures. Paul had everything planned, from scaring William's family and distracting the bodyguard to turning off the electricity in Sofia's mansion to distract and put on a little show. William left his post and ran home to protect his family, leaving only one security guard to protect Sofia from three criminals—an impossible task! It took Penny only a few minutes to kill the guard, and she smiled with joy after tasting blood.
Sofia was at home with her boyfriend, Rhodes, who had just discovered that it was nothing more than a publicity stunt for the pop star. He was heartbroken and felt cheated. Sofia tried to comfort him, but he simply couldn't accept that their relationship had always been superficial. They decided it was best for Rhodes to leave, and just as he was leaving the house, Paul entered the mansion. Rhodes couldn't leave because the security guard outside, who was in charge of the gates, had been murdered. Rhodes eventually found the electrical box and restored the power.
Paul immediately welcomed Sofia. He knew she had mental issues, but seeing her act as if they had known each other all their lives frightened him. Paul apologized for his absence and declared that they would be married that very night. He introduced Penny and asked her to prepare Sofia for the ceremony. Penny, a French criminal with serious psychological issues, decided to help her friend because she found Paul entertaining. Possibly she had feelings for him, and Sofia wasn't as beautiful as Paul had described her. But to fulfill her friend's wish, she helped Sofia with her wedding dress. Sofia asked Penny to get her makeup bag from her room, and as she left, Rhodes came in. Sofia hit him with a guitar, assuming it was Penny, but was pleased to know Rhodes was still there.
After regaining consciousness, Rhodes noticed Penny approaching Sofia from behind and pushed her aside. Once again, Rhodes was knocked unconscious, but this time with a baseball bat. Sofia and Penny got into a fight that was briefly halted when Penny discovered there was a piano in the room. She was a passionate singer and asked Sofia for a duet. Sofia thought it was the easiest way to distract the murderous psychopath and joined Penny. She was surprised to discover Penny was very talented, but she soon remembered why public life wasn't for her. Suddenly, Penny hit Sofia and attempted to murder her. Perhaps it was jealousy that triggered her emotions, or maybe she simply felt a strong urge to kill.
