Netflix's true crime anthology series American Manhunt focuses on its next target: Osama bin Laden. The new three-part series closely follows the success of The Boston Marathon Bombing and the O.J. Simpson miniseries. Netflix will release all three episodes on March 10, 2025, and it looks set to be another big hit for the streaming service.
Osama bin Laden was one of the world's most infamous criminals who evaded capture for nearly a decade after planning the horrific attacks on New York City on September 11, 2001. The true crime docuseries will interview government officials who were involved in the hunt for bin Laden, as well as others connected to the notorious case.
Mor Loushy and Daniel Sivan are the directors behind Netflix's new true crime event, American Manhunt: Osama bin Laden. The three-part series will delve into one of the biggest manhunts in history, featuring interviews with the people who helped bring down the terrorist. It is set to be another binge-worthy series as the American Manhunt anthology expands its true crime universe.
September 11, 2001 is a date etched in the memory of everyone who remembers what happened on that fateful day. It started out like any normal, busy morning in New York City, until two 747s crashed into the World Trade Center. Two more planes crashed into the Pentagon in Washington and a field near Pennsylvania, and 2,977 innocent people lost their lives. A global manhunt was launched to identify the organization behind the horrific attacks, and it was quickly established that the prime suspects were a terrorist group known as Al-Qaeda. They were based in Afghanistan, and their leader was the elusive Osama bin Laden. He was born into a wealthy family in Saudi Arabia, but quickly established himself as a militant leader.
Osama bin Laden was already on the FBI's most wanted list long before the atrocities of September 11, 2001, after declaring war on the United States on several occasions. He proved to be an impossible man to find after the terrorist attacks, as he hid from authorities in several different locations. The United States eventually managed to track him down in a compound in Pakistan on May 2, 2011. Operation Neptune Spear was the code name for the task of taking down bin Laden, and it was run by a special operations military unit. The exact details of the operation are not known, but the Netflix documentary looks like it might shed more light on it. The president of the United States in 2011 was Barack Obama, and it was he who broke the news to the world:
I can inform the American people and the world that the United States has carried out an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of Al Qaeda and a terrorist responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women and children.
Almost ten years ago, a bright September day was darkened by the worst attack on the American people in our history. The images of 9/11 are seared into our national memory. Hijacked planes streaking across a clear September sky; the Twin Towers collapsing; plumes of black smoke rising from the Pentagon; the wreckage of Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where the actions of heroic citizens prevented even more pain and destruction.
Nothing will ever erase the trauma suffered by the families of the victims of 9/11, but knowing that Osama bin Laden was captured and killed is a small comfort. Bin Laden's death did wonders for Barack Obama and significantly contributed to his re-election for a second term. The threats facing the world have continued, but lessons were learned from 9/11. For example, security at airports was significantly increased and many questions were raised about how 19 terrorists were able to board and hijack four commercial airliners. As for Al Qaeda, it still exists, but it is not as strong as it was under Bin Laden's leadership.
The trailer for American Manhunt: Osama bin Laden was recently released and has people intrigued. The documentary series, which will be released in three parts, will premiere on Netflix.
