Netflix unveiled a new lineup of Italian fiction series and feature films at the streaming platform's "See What's Next" event in Rome on Tuesday.
In addition to the shows and series that have already been announced, the lineup includes two new feature films and a pair of drama series.
Stars: Eduardo Scarpetta, Vanessa Scalera, Massimiliano Caiazzo
Created by Filippo Gravino and Elisa Dondi, L'Histoire de ma famille tells the story of a heartbreaking day in the life of a father, Fausto (Eduardo Scarpetta), who does everything he can to prepare his family for life without him. Seriously ill, he brings together his disparate clan and imposes unexpected responsibilities on each of them, hoping to bring them closer together and ease old feuds.
Between tender memories, hilarious mistakes and heartbreaking decisions, this series offers an immersion into the heart of family dynamics, where everyone tries to reconcile their mistakes and their hopes. With touching characters played by Italian actors such as Vanessa Scalera and Massimiliano Caiazzo, the series combines laughter and tears to tell a universal story about loss, love and passing on.
The new films are Il treno dei bambini (The Children’s Train) by director Cristina Comencini (Latin Lover, Don’t Tell) and Fabbricante di lacrime (Tear Maker) by Alessandro Genovesi (My Big Fat Italian Gay Wedding). The former is an adaptation of Viola Ardone’s epic bestseller of the same name, a story based on true events about children in post-war Italy who were sent from the poverty of the south to live with their families in the north of the country. The latter is inspired by Erin Doom’s novel about two very different orphans with similar traumatic pasts who are adopted together by the same new family.
One of Netflix's new Italian series is Storia della mia famiglia (The Story of My Family), from director Claudio Cupellini, whose TV credits include Gomorrah and The Land of My Children. The drama follows Faust on the last day of his life.
Netflix also revealed it was adapting Alice Urciuolo's YA bestseller Adorazione as a series, with Stefano Mordini (The Invisible Witness) attached to direct. The coming-of-age story follows a group of teenagers during a sweltering summer that will change their lives forever.
Previously announced Netflix Italy titles include a second season of Todo llama a la salvacion and La ley según Lidia Poët, as well as a series adaptation of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's epic historical novel The Leopard.
Tinny Andreatta, vice president of Italian content at Netflix, said the new programming was proof that the streaming service remains "committed to our investment in Italy and Italian stories."
