The story told in the first season of Prime Video's docu-series 50,000 First Dates: A True Story is nothing short of a perfect romantic comedy script. However, the difference is that it reportedly happened in real life, giving hope that true love can actually exist.
The story of Nesh Pillay and Johannes "JJ" Jakope garnered massive attention online. Several media outlets have reportedly tagged them as the real-life couple of 50 First Dates. 50 First Dates is a classic romantic comedy film starring Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler.
Star: Nesh Pillay
The first half of episode 1 dives into Nesh's backstory and what led to her brain injury. A marketing professional, businesswoman, mother, and fiancé, Nesh has her life completely turned upside down when she wakes up one morning with memory loss. She believes she is still 17 and can't remember her daughter's name, or anything about her fiancé, JJ, or even what year and month it is. Since doctors don't know what caused her memory loss, Nesh and JJ set out to try and get answers.
Of course, those answers come, and at one point Nesh laughs into the camera and says, "I've been so damaged by my experience of being laid off that I was thrilled that something showed up on my brain scan." The documentary never delves into this aspect of Nesh's psyche, or the need for online validation and how that could potentially damage her own relationship. In fact, at one point, she hits the record button right before a couples therapy session.
However, this is an easy documentary to watch despite this, thanks in part to Nesh and JJ's banter and likeability (when they're not, on the rare occasion, fighting). We see how their “meet tender” came about, along with various trials and tribulations that led them to finally being together. From here, the show moves into fly-on-the-wall territory, showing the current ups and downs of JJ and Nesh’s relationship as if it were an episode of 90 Day Fiancé.
Returning to Pillay and Johannes’ story, according to the New York Post, Pillay suffered a brain injury, which resulted in amnesia. The series follows her journey navigating life with sudden memory loss, during which she sometimes forgets her fiancé, her age, and even the current year.
In a viral clip, she was reportedly shocked to discover she had a son, asking, “Do I have a son? Is the child safe?”
The project presents an unfiltered account of her struggles, showing moments where Pillay believes she is a teenager and mistakes her fiancé for an Uber driver. The series captures their journey, highlighting the hardships they face as Pillay tries to rediscover her life and love.
Despite her condition, as her fiancé looked after her, Pillay fell in love with him again. She reportedly shared online that despite having lost her memory, she still wanted to marry Johannes. Eventually, he proposed to her again. However, due to her condition, Pillay was initially unable to give legal consent, according to reports.
