My Review: Fake Streaming on Paramount My Rating 7.5/10
I found Fake to be a captivating psychological drama. I can't call it a thriller as no crime or murder was committed, but it is a dramatic journey into deception and obsession.
Asher Keddie, who plays Birdie Bell, gives an award-winning performance and deserves all the praise she will obviously receive for this role. She is very believable as a successful journalist dedicated to her career.
Creator: Anya BeyersdorfStars: Asher Keddie, David Wenham, Heather Mitchell
Her loneliness seems to be over when she answers a dating app and meets Joe Burt, a well-dressed but rough-looking and soft-spoken guy who says he loves the outdoors and his children from a broken marriage.
Birdie is reluctant at first to move on, especially after a warning from one of Joe's ex-girlfriends to run.
Without spoilers, you get the gist of the story - it's not a new concept.
After all, long before dating apps existed, a particular type of man has led women into a merry dance of deception for centuries with multiple wives and children.
Today's cyber world of meeting partners on dating apps has certainly refined this practice.
My main criticism of this well-acted and well-produced series relates to some plot inconsistencies that I can't reveal without a spoiler or two.
One is how Joe Burt was able to present himself so well in fancy suits, ties, etc. and have some obvious income, but live like a homeless bum on a boat with his dog.
The other was why Birdie Bell's friend had to convince her to change the locks on her apartment after certain revelations about Joel Burt were discovered.
David Wenham, while not my favorite actor, gives a very good performance, but it was all too obvious to me that he was a fraud from the start. His demeanor and leer were more befitting of a serial killer than an eligible date. I would have run away.
Another wonderful performance worth mentioning in Fake is that of veteran Australian actress Heather Mitchell, who is irritatingly wonderful as Margeaux's mother Birdie.
I enjoyed Fake with reservations, as Asher Keddie gives one of the best performances this season - it's well worth watching.
