I didn't really know what I was about to see, but the animation of the sign caught my attention. I also noticed its Oscar nomination this year, for animated film, so this caught my attention as well. I wrapped up my wife and kids and went to see the screening in a small movie theater with beanbags (and other kids on them) all over the floor.
It started without words, so the children immediately realized this fact and reported it. It continued with images, a fabulous soundtrack and sensitive tones, that you cannot ignore, whether you are a child or an adult. No words need to be said to understand the loneliness of a dog living in New York in the 80s.

It is also not necessary to understand what a robot brings to his life once he is connected and working. The whole noisy and colorful environment is not capable of giving this dog half of what a cold tin robot can give him. And then they separate and the movie shifts in two directions: the real world and the fantasy world; both demonstrate longing and longing for any contact. From both sides.
The rhythm of the film is simply ecstatic and is part of the wide spectrum of colors, images and types of animals and figures that appear in it. Music is a part of the success that surrounds this production. The heart story and how it ends are other parts that just work so well.
On the negative side, the core of the film is not the presentation of friendship, but the will to recover it and how to fill the void, while searching. It doesn't always seem related, but it's so well put together that I didn't mind the actual flow of the movie, not one bit, and especially when other people's kids caught my attention and jumped out to ruin the flow of the movie. – externally.
It's definitely Oscar material: an unconventional big-studio movie that has New York in a shell. It's like a Woody Allen movie, without the whiny, neurotic main character, played by Allen himself. It's a special film that you definitely don't want to miss, whether it wins the Oscar or not.
