MAX is heading to outer space with the new animated sci-fi series “Scavengers Reign.” The show follows the crew of the space freighter Demeter, after it mysteriously goes off course and disappears into the vacuum of space. Which leads everyone to assume that its inhabitants are now dead.
However, the crew is still very much alive and finds themselves stranded on a different planet, one as beautiful as it is brutal. Now they must learn about the planet to survive until they find their way back home.
Stars: Wunmi Mosaku, Alia Shawkat, Sunita Mani
The trailer for “Scavengers Reign” shows us a beautiful planet, backed by a magnificent instrumental soundtrack. This idyllic landscape is often dotted with violence, destruction, and many plants growing from humans, living and dead.
It's been a tough time for animation at Max (formerly HBO Max). Numerous series and movies have not only been canceled but removed from streaming entirely as parent company Warner Bros. Discovery attempts to balance the books. Fortunately. New animated series are still being released. New shows like Scavenger's Reign.
Scavenger's Reign is an animated science fiction for adults. It's rare that adult Western animation isn't a comedy. It also doesn't imitate anime; It looks more like the visual style of European comics than anything else.
The show was created by Joe Bennett and Charles Huettner. The remaining crew of a damaged interstellar spaceship find themselves stranded on a beautiful but unforgiving alien planet, where they must survive long enough to escape or be rescued. As they attempt to locate the remains of their ship and their missing crewmates, their new home is revealed to be a hostile environment, capable of thriving for millennia without human interference.
With stunning animation and a unique atmosphere, Scavenger's Reign "presents a totally unique vision of the consequences of unbridled arrogance and humanity's eternal desire to conquer the unknown."
The voice cast includes Wunmi Mosaku as Azi, Bob Stephenson as Sam, Sunita Mani as Ursula, Ted Travelstead as Kamen, and Alia Shawkat as Levi.
The show is executive produced by Chris Prynoski, Antonio Canobbio, Shannon Prynoski and Ben Kalina of Titmouse, Joe Bennet, Charles Huettner, as well as co-executive producers Sean Buckelew and James Merrill and supervising director Benjy Brooke of Green Street Pictures. The series is written by Bennet and Huettner with Jenny Deiker Restivo.
The show will debut with three episodes starting Thursday, October 19 at midnight PT. Three new episodes will follow weekly until November 9.
