The Always Sunny in Philadelphia star plays The Fool, aka Latte Pronto, a man who was confined to a mental health facility after losing his understanding of the world and, in turn, the ability to speak. He is later let go of the facility, even though he needs help, when a doctor says the state won't pay for his care: "We're going to put his ass on the first bus downtown."

Shortly after being released, Ray Liotta sees Day wandering around town, picks him up and takes him to a film set to finish filming scenes for a western's lead (also played by Day) because he is too drunk to film. and he refuses to leave his trailer.

Fool's Paradise is the directorial and writing debut of Charlie Day and features some of the most familiar and beloved names in the acting industry. The It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star's feature film was a long time in the making, production dating back to September 2018, when the project was initially called El Tonto. The film's release date was further pushed back on the calendar due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, but Day put it to good use, revisiting the scripts again based on advice from Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, and adding about 27 pages. which then led to several reshoots in December 2021. Guillermo del Toro also reportedly suggested making a change to the film's title, after which Day settled on the current name.
