Sinqua Walls and Jack Harlow are a basketball-winning machine in the official trailer for Hulu's "White Men Can't Jump" reboot. In the clip, released on April 20, Walls plays Kamal, an up-and-coming player whose future has been derailed, and Harlow plays Jeremy, whose own career has been halted due to injuries. Jeremy is into meditation, hydration, and yoga; Kamal tells her in the trailer that he's dressed like "a white girl at Whole Foods."
However, despite their differences, they come together to try to win money in a street basketball tournament, which would give their families a huge boost. The plot is familiar to fans of the original 1992 movie starring Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, but the new movie seems to put a modern spin on events.
Director: Calmatic
Writers: Kenya Barris, Doug Hall
Stars: Lance Reddick, Teyana Taylor, Laura Harrier
News that Walls would join Harlow in the reboot of the classic 1992 sports comedy first broke in April 2022. The actor previously appeared in Netflix's 2021 rom-com "Resort to Love" opposite Christina Milian. He also starred in the horror film "Nanny," which premiered at Sundance in 2022 and won the Grand Jury Prize at the festival.
Meanwhile, "White Men Can't Jump" marks Harlow's first acting role. According to Deadline, he was cast in the role after his first screen audition, which deeply impressed the executives.
The new version of "White Men Can't Jump" is based on a script by Doug Hall and "Black-ish" creator Kenya Barris, who also wrote the recent remake of "Cheaper by the Dozen." The film is directed by Calmatic, who has made a name for himself directing music videos, including Lil Nas X's hit video "Old Town Road." One of the film's producers is current NBA star Blake Griffin, who he knows a thing or two about dominating the court.
The original "White Men Can't Jump" features Harrelson, Snipes, and Rosie Perez, with Harrelson playing a former college basketball player who pushes other players who assume he's bad at basketball. His character teams up with Snipes to try to make more and more money, but his obsession with gambling drives a wedge between him and his girlfriend (Perez). If fans are concerned that Harlow isn't exactly the height of a basketball player, they should keep in mind that Harrelson and Snipes are both under six feet tall. Walls, for his part, is 6'3". In 2019, he participated in BET's celebrity basketball game.
