This Brazilian sitcom is directed by Rodrigo Sant'Anna and offers punctual humor to its audiences. The series meets all the requirements that a perfect sitcom must have (I'm not saying it doesn't have flaws). The humor of this series is based on everyday life that viewers can relate to.
The setting of this show is like a stage, different sets have been used. The entrance of several actors is sudden, and above all it is the sound of laughter in the background that sometimes determines whether one has to laugh or not. The clothes that Doña Isadir (played by Rodrigo Sant'anna) wears are quite conspicuous and include things like leopard-print boots, mismatched outfits, and her obsession with looking like she's still young. Isadir is a very unique lady, she is not a normal old lady.
Creator: Rodrigo Sant'anna
Stars: Rodrigo Sant'anna, Rafael Zulu, Lidi Lisboa
Isadir is a very laid back woman who doesn't want to grow old. She is aging physiologically, but her mind is still like a young one. This old lady wants to have a lot of fun, pick up random strangers, wear a bikini, and likes to fight with Alice (her daughter-in-law of hers whom she hates and defies at every turn). Isadir is the character that will change your perception of old women and will introduce you to a new world where there are no limits. She loves herself and is free spirited. It will be difficult for one to convince her of something that she has already made up her mind about. Many things can be learned from her.
Each episode has her own story and Isadir is seen sharing the stage with other actors. Isadir goes to live with her son and her daughter-in-law because of the pandemic, but she ends up staying much longer. She put her apartment up for rent to earn some money in the meantime. Her daughter-in-law Alice surely doesn't want him to keep hers for obvious reasons like: she doesn't spend enough time with her husband.
At times, she can feel like the show's length is being wasted due to some characters just repeating the same jokes. These characters include Marinez's grandsons Carlos and Isadir. Marinez, the assistant also seems to be forced into the plot despite the fact that Daniela Fontan is giving a great performance in it. The relationships that Isadir shares with others are really fun to watch as she freely speaks her mind. The way she goes up and down the stairs is very funny. You can hardly resist your laugh after watching that.
Smother-In-Law episodes are very short, averaging 20 minutes in length. At the end of each episode, we get to see some bloopers, which are fun to watch as they show us what the cast did to film those scenes. We can see that tension is present between the in-laws, and this issue has been wonderfully addressed with the use of humor in this comedy series.
This first Brazilian sitcom series is quite entertaining and you won't get bored. The series really deserves all the credits for its character development and its plot. The sense of humor, the relationships shared between the in-laws and Isadir's way of living life make it worth watching.
