The second season of Harlem picks up where the first left off: with best friends Camille, Angie, lesbian resident Tye, and queer baby Quinn navigating life and love in the heart of New York City. As the weather warms up, things heat up in the lives of our fierce foursome. Love is in the air while the cherry trees are in bloom. Black joy, and more specifically the joy of black women, is one of the main themes of the season and it is a pleasure to participate in it.
Tye (Jerrie Johnson) begins the new season and discovers that she has been listed as a repeat offender on a website called "She Be Toxic." Sometimes we have to sit with the consequences of our actions, and that sets Tye on a course to find a deeper connection in her life. As she stumbles along, she meets guest star Rachel True (of The Craft and Half & Half, who's a treat!). The chemistry between True and Johnson is wonderful to see, as their relationship transitions from a little antagonistic to warm and comforting, and True's character moves away from the show's typical guest stars. Her character is a soft spot for Tye, even though she forces him to really think about what she wants. When I compare her to say, Whoopi Goldberg's character Dr. Pruitt, a Meagan Good mentor who's mostly pretty blunt (if not a bit mean), it's a juxtaposition that's unexpected but necessary.
Another source of joy is watching Quinn discover her sexuality. At the end of the first season, she meets Isabella, a character portrayed as the queer AOC type, a young political force, and their chemistry is undeniable. For the fifth episode of the new season, "Pride", Quinn dresses in a rainbow and glitter. She's a bit over the top, but she made me smile even if I rolled my eyes. Are her attempts to engage with the queer community a little embarrassing? Absolutely. But she's also so perfectly indicative of the character. Quinn is the definition of cringey, but endearing.
We hope that the second season of the Harlem series will also include a total of ten episodes. No announcement has been made regarding the number of episodes for the second season of the Harlem series.
