Reba McEntire's The Hammer follows Kim Wheeler (Reba McEntire), an outspoken lawyer who is appointed as a judge for Nevada's fifth district and is one of America's few remaining roving judges. After the reigning judge passes away under suspicious circumstances, Kim finds herself covering a loop that stretches between Las Vegas and Reno, a rugged, often desolate area where anything can happen. Gavel in her hand, she lays down the law with a brand of no-nonsense justice, quickly earning her the nickname "The Hammer." As the investigation into the former judge's death intensifies, Kim's sister Kris (Melissa Peterman), who runs the local brothel, suddenly becomes the prime suspect, and Kim must work even harder to make sure she is found out. do justice.
The Hammer is modeled after real-life Nevada Circuit Court Judge Kim Wanker. The real-life Judge Wanker (pronounced "Wonker") is actually known as "The Hammer" and still serves as a traveling circuit judge in Nevada. Due to threats from those who disagree with the verdicts and sentences he hands down, Wanker keeps self-defense a top priority: he packs a 9mm, drives a car with no ID, and is usually accompanied by a sheriff!
Trained as a professional race car driver, Wanker also sometimes has one foot a little too early when he drives from field to field, leading to unforeseen delays getting to her next session when she's pulled over for speeding.
