Hariprasad Jayanna's Padavi Poorva is unprecedented nostalgia. It takes the audience back to 1995-96 and presents a contrast to today's life dictated by technology. The film has a certain charm, especially since it primarily engages with a sizeable audience.
Padavi Poorva, which means undergraduate takes place in and around a university. Pipi Naveena (Pruthvi Shamanur), recently admitted to the PUC, is the blue-eyed boy at school, for whom friends are a priority. Enter Nithya (Anjali Anish) for whom Naveena develops a special feeling. While Naveena has dreams of him for the future since his father wants to see him as a doctor, fate has other plans. A situation arises in which Naveena's relationship with his friends puts him to the test, to the point of sacrificing himself to rekindle a broken friendship.
Director: Hariprasad Jayanna
Stars: Prithvi Shamanur, Anjali Anish, Yasha Shivakumar
Newcomer director Hariprasad, a longtime associate of Yogaraj Bhat, deftly tracks the ups and downs of a PUC student and his friends. He seems to have followed the lead of the ace director for his first film. Featuring new talent, the film is about the love and friendship of college students and their impact on their loved ones. The movie takes place at a time when life was not driven by mobile phones or technology. The aura of those days makes the narrative even more elegant.
Hariprasad beautifully highlights the importance of the simple aspects of life, packing his film with drama, action, and loads of fun. The jokes between the teacher and the students are a riot. The climax turn of the director, who has written the story, is a real surprise and will be open to multiple interpretations.
While the script needed to be tighter, the working sequences and witty dialogue make the glitch ignorable. At just 19 years old, actor Pruthvi Shamanur in his debut has cleverly handled his character, proving that he has a great future in film. Anjali Anish has a charming presence and justifies the role of him, just like other actors like Yasha Shivakumar, Rajneesh, Mandara and Vijay Kiran. The actor, who has played the role of Viji (Vijesh) in the group of friends, is also a great find and promises a lot. Sharath Lohitashwa, Rangayana Raghu and Rama Rama Re's Nataraj appear briefly but do their bit. At the end of the movie, many familiar artists appear in cameo roles and make the movie more special.
Santhosh Rai Pataje's photography makes Padavi Poorva a colorful show, even in dull moments, while Arjun Janya commands attention with his fresh music that pairs well with college drama.
Padavi Poorva offers you a revisit to the university life of the mid-nineties and relives the nostalgic moments. If you're in love or the type to celebrate friendship, you have an additional reason to watch this film, which has light-hearted humor presented by young talents.
