The logical thing, the sane thing, is to stay on the ground. But they row. Why are these big wave surfers risking their lives to ride these mountain-sized waves? The answer is to overcome fear. "Ground Swell: The Other Side of Fear" is an in-depth look at the 2021-22 big wave season through the eyes of Nic Von Rupp, Kai Lenny, Matt Bromley, Torrey Meister, and pioneering surfer Bianca Valenti. They all get over their fear and find out what's on the other side as they take on monster waves at locations like Nazare in Portugal, Jaws and Pipeline in Hawaii, and Mavericks in Northern California.
If there's one thing we can all agree on, it's that surf cinema is as important now as it ever was. As vlogs and TikkeyTokketies, Instagrams, and OnlyFanses become more and more plentiful, the art of long-form, thoughtful storytelling shines even brighter. The Florida Surf Film Festival is one such example of greatness, showcasing curated artwork after curated artwork.

“I was wondering why the hell we care to see crazy people riding big waves,” she replied. “What makes it interesting and compelling? And not from me, but the surfers talked about how they deal with fear and if a wacko like me can see them overcome fear in the water, I can think of overcoming fear in my life, from asking for a raise to doing my best. That fear is a tool, fear is a device and if by seeing a maniac riding a giant Nazare or Pipe or Mavericks and getting over the fear of him, maybe I can make my life a little better.”
