2023 is going to be another big year for superhero movies. Particularly for DC, which is kicking off the year with Shazam! Fury of the gods. The highly anticipated sequel opens in March and now we have the official rating of Shazam's return to theaters. According to The Classification and Rating Administration, Fury of the Gods will be PG-13 for "action sequences and violence, and language."
This shouldn't come as much of a surprise as the original Shazam! it was also rated PG-13 for similar material. You can definitely tell from the first trailer for Shazam 2, released earlier this year at San Diego Comic-Con, that this sequel will have the same goofy tone as the original. Shazam, despite some edgier jokes and dark demonic imagery, was a glee-filled, family-focused superhero comedy with plenty of well-shot action. It was one of the most accessible movies in the original set of DCEU adventures. The endless amount of action was the main reason for the PG-13 rating, but that more light-hearted approach was one of the main reasons critics and general moviegoers alike loved it. It also helped that Zachary Levi gave a brilliant performance as the title hero.
Director: David F. Sandberg
Writers: Henry Gayden, Chris Morgan, Bill Parker
Stars: Helen Mirren, Zachary Levi, Rizwan Manji
Shazam 2 seeks to take everything that worked in the first film and bring it to an electrifying 11. The story of this heroic sequel will center on the Shazam Family facing off against the demigods Hespera and Kalypso, who are the daughters of the goddess Atlas played by Shazam. by Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu. Rising West Side Story star Rachel Zegler will also play Atlas' youngest daughter, Anthea, in the sequel.
It's been an exciting time to be a Shazam fan with the introduction of the hero's rival, Black Adam, played by Dwayne Johnson, finally breaking out among moviegoers last month. Given that electric drive, it will be very exciting to see where director David F. Sandberg and Levi take the character in this next installment. It will also be interesting to see if there will be any connections or teasers for a future showdown with Black Adam in the new movie.
The marketing of Shazam! Fury of the Gods is slowly rising. Sandberg recently revealed a behind-the-scenes image to announce post-production on the film and the sequel also recently unveiled the first poster of him earlier this month. Now that we have the official rating for the movie, DC fans should expect a new trailer very soon when Fury of the Gods opens in theaters on March 17, 2023.
