Will Smith, who is currently on a press tour for his upcoming film Emancipation, addressed the audience not ready for the actor's comeback with his first movie since he slapped Chris Rock onstage at the Oscars.
“I totally get it: If someone isn't ready, I would absolutely respect them and allow them the space to not be ready,” Smith said in a recent interview. “My biggest concern is my team: Antoine has done what I think is the best job of his entire career. The people on this team have done some of the best work of his entire career, and my deepest hope is that my actions will not penalize my team. At this point, that's what I'm working for."
"I hope the material, the power of the film, the timeliness of the story, I hope the good that can be done will open people's hearts to at least see, recognize and support the incredible artists in and around this movie," he added. After the infamous 2022 Oscars slap, Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and was later banned from attending the Oscars for 10 years in light of his actions at the March 27 ceremony.
Meanwhile, Emancipation tells the triumphant story of Peter (Smith), a man who escapes slavery, relying on his wits, unwavering faith, and deep love for his family to evade cold-blooded hunters and the unforgiving swamps of Louisiana in his search for freedom. .
The film is inspired by the 1863 photos of "Battered Peter", taken during a Union Army medical examination, which first appeared in Harper's Weekly. An image, known as "The Whipped Back", showing Peter's bare back mutilated by the whipping of his slavers, ultimately contributed to increasing public opposition to slavery.
The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua, from a screenplay by William N. Collage. The film is produced by Will Smith and Jon Mone through Westbrook Studios, Joey McFarland through McFarland Entertainment, and Todd Black through Escape Artists. Chris Brigham, Antoine Fuqua, James Lassiter, Heather Washington, Cliff Roberts, Glen Basner and Scott Greenberg serve as executive producers.
Emancipation opens in theaters on December 2 and then streams on Apple TV+ starting December 9.
