When PhD student Olive Smith impulsively kisses the intimidating Professor Adam Carlsen to help her best friend, the two end up agreeing to a fake relationship that becomes increasingly difficult to maintain as a charade. I approached *The Love Hypothesis* expecting exactly what the title suggests: a polished academic rom-com, an absurd fake-dating arrangement, an incredibly attractive professor—seemingly incapable of smiling—and enough sexual tension to constitute a laboratory hazard. And, to its credit, the film knows exactly what it is. It doesn't try to reinvent the romantic comedy; it aims to make a well-known formula work, and for the most part, it succeeds. The four short films in *Lust Stories 3* revolve around female desire, though only one manages to capture that burning, erotic passion with true style. It is somewhat surprising to see filmmakers of the caliber of Vikramaditya Motwane and Kiran Rao—who have shown glimpses of their true potential in imperfect works like *Black Warrant*, *CTRL*, and *Laapataa Ladies*—stumble so badly with their respective segments in this anthology. However, they make a wise choice: approaching their stories with a light, comedic tone, which makes it easy to dismiss them as "mechanical, disposable work done for a paycheck." Many horror stories stem from a bad idea. Here is an example: a pregnant woman wants to experience a home birth, but her home is a cabin in the middle of nowhere—deep in the woods—and her due date falls in the dead of winter. A character in *Goody Goody* with extensive experience in these matters makes it clear to the expectant mother that this is a terrible and potentially dangerous plan. Predictably, she decides to go ahead with it anyway. On the other hand, some horror movies that kick off with a bad idea manage to be effective. We simply have to accept that Goody (Samantha Robinson) is determined to give birth in a cabin—an accurate description, though it undersells the house's actual size—located in the woods and, possibly (or rather probably, given the genre), amidst harsh weather.
