I Wish You Had Told Me 2025 Movie Review Trailer Poster

This film revolves around a pastor named Seph who loses his father, Otep. Like his son, Otep was a devout churchgoer and very involved in the church. However, what was about to happen was something Seph was not prepared for. At the funeral, it was revealed that Otep was gay and had spent decades trying to hide the truth. 

This leaves Seph very confused and unable to comprehend how to react to the situation. Upon further investigation, Seph discovers love letters his father wrote to a pen pal, and reading them, he clearly sees all the love and emotions poured into them. Seph, being a pastor himself, has to come to terms with this truth about his father and, at the same time, change his own beliefs. This entire process of openness and acceptance is what the film portrays.

What I liked most about the film was its concept of involving a pastor and homosexuality. The fact that someone so close to Seph was gay and how he copes with the situation is a journey worth watching. It also opens our eyes as viewers. That is the beauty of the film, and one of the main reasons why it should be seen. 

The father-son relationship is explored extensively, both in life and after death. This is a major draw of the film, as we see a son grappling with his father's secrets and not the other way around. The level of maturity Seph displays at such a young age also demonstrates the nuanced character development the filmmakers achieved. Seph's character continues to develop throughout the film. It's truly amazing to watch him go from discovering his father's secrets to accepting them. 

The introspection also makes us reflect and realize how much we need to work on ourselves. We often see films where it's the parents who have to accept their children's choices. However, this was a refreshing perspective where we see a son accepting his father's decision, even after death. All these elements make this storyline worthwhile, as it offers us something new to ponder for a long time. So, if you enjoy heartwarming films, this story is well worth watching. 

It leaves you with lasting impressions that make you reflect on the delicate aspects of life. Join Seph on his journey of self-discovery and learn more about life through the eyes of this young shepherd in a unique way. The film's dialogue is gentle, and the cinematography is excellent overall. The pacing is consistent and never feels rushed.
