In Tyler Perry's Finding Joy, one must follow arguably the most annoying and immature protagonist, whose delusions will leave viewers baffled from the moment the film begins. It's quite clear that Joy's professional and personal life is quite disastrous, but finding ways to justify it when the situation is so obvious must be a delusion of another level. There's a moment early on where we learn that Joy had no idea her crush's girlfriend, now fiancée, even existed and thought he was going to propose to her. It's almost as if she completely ignores warning signs and has no survival instinct whatsoever.
Tyler Perry's content is unpredictable, mostly disappointing, and this film, with the upcoming holiday season, is quite disappointing if you're looking for a fun Christmas movie. However, the film is quite different from other Perry projects and shows two troubled people reconciling with their lives, overcoming their difficulties, and falling in love in the process.

The film highlights the importance of finding warmth and love during the holiday season and how, above all, we all want someone to call our own and with whom to share our sorrows without being judged. In a way, the film will leave you with a feeling of happiness, as, beyond the annoying protagonist with whom the film begins, we see character development throughout the plot that will bring a smile to your face. I think Perry's film has merit, and for once, I didn't feel uncomfortable watching Joy and Ridge interact.
However, the film can be slow and predictable in some aspects. As the main characters get trapped inside a small cabin during a terrible storm, things begin to get deeper and more personal as the hours pass. The initial friction gives way to something quite sweet, and at some moments it even gives you butterflies in your stomach. But, at other times, the story takes an obvious turn that will make you roll your eyes, especially when Joy ignores the obvious warning signs and some unexpected twists throughout the plot.
Furthermore, aside from Joy and Ridge, the other characters are quite superficial and uninteresting, and have been added solely for comedic relief. I find the lack of character development in a film strange and inappropriate, and this movie is no exception. However, as mentioned earlier, this film is quite different from most of Perry's other melodramatic and over-the-top productions, which will pleasantly surprise you. It's very relatable and entertaining in many ways, leaving you with a smile on your face.
Tyler Perry's Finding Joy is a heartwarming and surprisingly subtle and profound Christmas romantic comedy. Although the supporting characters are somewhat superficial, Shannon Thornton and Tosin Morohunfola are charming and will give you butterflies.
