Caramelo, Netflix's heartwarming new Brazilian drama, centers on a chef diagnosed with a terminal illness and the dog who came into his life and became his best friend. The story's hero, Caramelo, was abandoned in a cardboard box by the side of the road. Possibly rejected by the family who briefly adopted him, or perhaps considered too much trouble for the town where he was born, Caramelo realized from a young age that his daily struggle was finding food. He was a mischievous and energetic dog who always followed his stomach's dictates and ate whatever he found delicious without thinking about the consequences.
One day, when Caramelo turned 3, he crossed paths with Pedro, a young chef determined to make his mark in the culinary industry. When Caramelo tried to steal sausages, Pedro made sure the butcher didn't catch the dog in the act. There was something about Pedro that made Caramelo trust him immediately, and it was almost as if she had chosen him for life. After crossing paths at the market, Caramelo hopped into Pedro's van without him knowing. He surreptitiously accompanied his new friend to work.

Pedro arrived at the restaurant kitchen before his colleagues to work on a recipe he was trying to perfect. Caramelo watched the chef work his magic through a window and couldn't contain his hunger at the smell of the cooking meat. It was a crucial day for everyone in the kitchen, especially Pedro's boss, Iván. Laura, a food critic who had previously reviewed the restaurant, had returned for another tasting, and they were expected to do their best. The kitchen soon became chaotic when none of the dishes impressed the critics.
She looked for something unexpected, while Iván focused on serving the dishes he had perfected. And during this high-pressure situation, Pedro suffered a severe headache. So he went out, took a pill, and tried to relax before returning to his routine. Caramelo had been keeping an eye on Pedro, and as soon as he entered the kitchen, the mutt followed him. Just as Ivan was about to serve the dish they had prepared for the critic, Caramelo lunged at the plate and swallowed the piece of meat. Pedro tried to grab the dog, but Ivan wanted to punish him. When Pedro stopped him, Ivan retorted that it was his kitchen and he would do as he pleased. Martha, the restaurant owner, intervened and declared that the restaurant was hers and that she did not approve of what Ivan was doing. Ivan felt insulted, so he decided to quit his job immediately.
Pedro temporarily took over as head chef. He decided to serve Laura the coxinha he had recently perfected. Laura was amused; she never expected to be served a street food snack in a fine-dining restaurant. She suspected that Ivan might not have been responsible for this radical decision, and Martha confirmed that the dish had been prepared by her sous-chef, Pedro. One bite of coxinha and Laura was fascinated. That was reason enough for Martha to include it on the menu and also ask Pedro to take over as head chef. Pedro had dreamed of this day since the beginning of his career, and it had finally come true. When he found the dog waiting outside the restaurant, he offered him some of his leftovers and admitted that without him, none of this would have been possible.
Upon arriving home, Pedro was surprised to hear loud barking. He glanced from his balcony and saw the market dog waiting patiently for him in the pouring rain. Pedro had no choice but to bring him into his apartment. He gave the dog a blanket to sleep on and showed him a designated place to relieve himself, but the next morning, when he woke up, his house was a mess. The dog nearly destroyed his home, and Pedro thought it might be best to surrender him to a shelter.
Pedro had previously crossed paths with Camila, the co-owner of the dog school/shelter. She was surprised to see him there, and just as he explained how difficult it was to adopt adult dogs, Pedro felt the throbbing pain in his head again. After resting for a while, he felt better. The dog was still licking his head, something he'd been doing since the night before. Pedro complained, but Camila felt he should go to the doctor for a checkup. Dogs often detect illnesses even before humans do, so she sensed that maybe the dog sensed something was wrong.
Finally, Pedro consulted a doctor, and after an MRI, the doctor explained that he had a brain tumor (cerebral glioma) and that if it turned out to be cancerous, he would need to undergo chemotherapy. The doctor didn't believe Pedro could make a full recovery, but they did believe they could expect a remission. After his diagnosis, Pedro had difficulty concentrating at work and asked Martha to allow him to spend two weeks at home and create a new menu. Although Martha wasn't ready at first, she eventually decided to give Pedro the license, hoping he would impress her with the new dishes.
Pedro didn't dare tell his mother the truth, but he knew he wasn't ready to go through this difficult stage of his life alone. So he decided to adopt the dog he'd left at the shelter. If it weren't for him, Pedro wouldn't have ignored the headache. The dog had helped him from the moment they met, and Pedro admitted they had a connection. He decided to name him "Caramelo" because of his caramel-colored fur, and he also enrolled him in dog school to help him train.
Camila was overjoyed when Pedro decided to adopt Caramelo. As someone who had dedicated her life to training and caring for dogs, she found it sweet that Pedro noticed the small ways Caramelo had changed his life. He wasn't an easy dog to train, but Pedro didn't give up. He knew it would take time, but he couldn't imagine his life without his four-legged best friend. Pedro and Camila hosted Caramelo together, and Luciana, Camila's best friend and co-owner of the school, sensed the growing attraction between them.
One day, Pedro finally worked up the courage to ask Camila out. Though it was more of a formal invitation to try his tasting menu at the restaurant, when Camila hesitated, Luciana promised Pedro they would come. Pedro was both nervous and excited to see Camila walk into the restaurant. He brought his famous coxinha to the table, and Camila was impressed. Paula, Pedro's friend and colleague, was concerned to notice a strand of hair on the kitchen counter. Pedro hadn't told them about his diagnosis yet, so he simply tied a scarf around his neck and continued working.
The situation took a tragic turn when Pedro added salt to a dish and his customer sent it back, saying it was inedible. Pedro tasted the dish and thought it was fine, but when Paula tried it, she realized the customer was right. The headache, the pressure of delivering it, and the sudden realization that his illness might have affected his taste buds got to him, and he collapsed on the floor. They took him to the hospital where he was receiving treatment, where they told him the chemotherapy hadn't worked and they had no choice but to operate on his tumor. Pedro didn't expect to find Camila waiting for him at the hospital. Pedro pretended it was nothing serious, but Camila revealed that she already knew he had been diagnosed with cancer.
At first, she wasn't allowed to accompany Pedro, but she lied that she was his wife and eventually learned about his illness. Pedro only had a week before the operation and felt overwhelmed. Since he couldn't have a future with Camila, he decided not to go through with it. The next morning, his friend Leo, from his chemotherapy sessions, arrived at his apartment. He had been battling cancer for a long time and wasn't ready to see Pedro give up so soon. Leo encouraged him and advised him to live life to the fullest in the six days he had before the operation. When Leo learned that Pedro had decided not to see Camila again, he was disappointed. He believed Pedro was stressing over a future that didn't even exist. According to him, even though they couldn't be together forever, enjoying the present was all he needed.
The food truck idea was a huge success, and on opening night, they served a good number of enthusiastic customers. Even Laura, the critic, stopped by their stand to try their coxinha again. She advised him to contact her if he ever needed an investor. Camila and Pedro felt hopeful; they knew that if they put in the effort, they would be able to save the dog school. Pedro decided to stay and clean while Camila returned home. Pedro prepared dinner for Caramelo and was surprised to see that he showed no interest in the food and continued barking.
Pedro soon experienced extreme discomfort; the stabbing pain returned, and he collapsed to the floor. Pedro was unconscious, and although Caramelo did his best to get him out of the van, it was impossible. Meanwhile, the stove was still on, and a cloth caught fire. Caramelo knew he had to do something immediately, so he decided to find Camila. On the way, he stepped on a piece of glass and hurt his paw, but that didn't stop him from finding her. In the end, when Camila saw Caramelo approaching with an injured foot, she thought it was important to get Pedro checked out.
Once again, Caramelo saved his life, and Pedro was rushed to the hospital. He had to undergo surgery immediately, but before the procedure began, he asked Camila and her mother to bring Caramelo to him. He wanted to thank her before entering the operating room. Since the hospital had a strict no-dogs policy, Camila decided to fill the hospital with all the dogs she had at the shelter and distract the staff while she took Caramelo to Pedro. The plan worked, and Pedro had the chance to thank his best friend for saving him once again.
Caramelo's ending revealed that Pedro survived the operation. The threat hadn't disappeared, and he continued to live with the constant fear that the worst would happen one day. But Pedro heeded Leo's advice and continued to live his life. He realized that appreciating the little things in life was the only thing that mattered. He married Camila; they eventually welcomed their son into the world, and Caramelo remained by his side through thick and thin. Their food truck business was a success, so they opened a cafe for dogs and their humans. The business allowed Camila and Pedro to merge their passion with something they truly cared about.
Years passed; Caramelo was fifteen years old and now had a sugar face. Pedro realized he didn't have much time left with Caramelo, so he decided to go to the beach to enjoy the waves. Caramelo had always loved the beach and seemed interested in sharks (at least he enjoyed watching them on TV!). Together, Pedro and Caramelo spent a peaceful day watching the waves, and it was possibly the last memorable activity they did together before Caramelo passed away. He supported Pedro when he had no one to share his feelings with, and now that he had a supportive family, Caramelo could finally die in peace. He had proven to be the ultimate savior, a loyal friend, someone who always lifted the mood, and, of course, the sweetest shark on earth!
