The ending of Under a Dark Sun certainly implies that there's a chance the thriller could return with a bang for a second season. While the series starts off a bit slow, the second half throws us dark twist after twist, some unnecessary, but others quite interesting. However, the twists are well explained and don't leave us with too many questions. But I guess you have to pay attention to follow the story, so if you got distracted by what was in the kitchen or your Instagram, I've got you covered. Early in the series, Alba, a young, single mother of one, ends up on a rose farm looking for a job.
She'd received an email for an interview, but the man who was supposed to interview her says he never called her. At the time, Alba and her son would be moving to Barcelona soon, so the money she'd earn from the farm would be a big help; however, she doesn't realize she's walking into a trap. A trap set by someone in her blood family, but she doesn't know it yet. At this point, we're led to believe that the family Alba supposedly works for is evil, but in reality, every story has two sides. That said, let's move on to the season 1 finale.

The first person Alba met at the estate was a man named Valentin. This man seemed helpful and kind, but instead, he turned out to be one of the villains. While he's not the person with power, what I hated most was the twist involving him. We believed Mathieu was the man who hurt women because he always hangs around with other women and has the air of a sexual predator, but in reality, it's Valentin who lures victims by selling them the dream of a happy life in France if they're willing to spend sedated nights where they are sold to random clients. But Valentin has nothing against Alba; he's just doing a job for the true villain of the series.
Valentin is the one who puts Alba in the coffin in the first episode. He's the one who kidnapped Leo and asked Alba to kill Jacques. But Alba managed to dodge all his bullets until Noor killed him for everything he did to her and the other immigrant women. I'm glad Noor got that closure. I feel like the show could have done without Valentín, and even if he had been around, they could have just said Manon was paying him to work for her; it wouldn't have been so hard to believe. This casual sex den in the housing estate seems strange—and Andreu went along with it, considering there were cameras everywhere? They paint him as a man of gold, so I guess we're supposed to believe he didn't do it and that it was all Valentín's fault.
While Alba tries hard to be a good mother, there's something that keeps bothering Leo: he doesn't know anything about his father, and she doesn't want to talk to him about it. Leo gets frustrated now that he's a teenager, but not telling him makes Alba a hypocrite, just like her parents. Her adoptive parents never told her she was adopted because they believed it was for the best, but she hated lies, and those lies also separated her from her son. On the other hand, Alba believes she's protecting her son from trauma by not telling him about his father. Not only was he an abusive, drug-addicted predator, but he also killed him when things got out of hand by pushing him out of a window. This is something that still bothers her, and she's been running away from it ever since.
When Alba first tells Leo about her father, he gets angry at her because he doesn't really understand the nature of the abuse—of course, because Alba doesn't explain it to him. Although he forgives her later, I think he'll only truly understand when he's a little older. It's always the two of them against the world. I think we can also talk about nature versus nurture, because it's possible that Leo's actions later in the series weren't accidental, but cruel. It's possible that he did it on purpose and is faking it for his mother. Although we don't see him as having a violent streak, it's possible he could end up like his father because of everything he's seen in this house.
The biggest twist in Under a Dark Sun is undoubtedly the answer to the question, "Who is Alba's father?" Early in the series, we're led to believe that Andreu is Alba's father, and that he likely forced himself on one of the rose farm workers and then disposed of her and the baby. However, it turns out that Alba's father is Mathieu, and he fell in love with Nadia, one of the workers, for whom he was going to leave his wife, Josephine. Andreu was a man who cared a lot about his reputation, so he would do anything to save his family from humiliation. Plus, Josephine seemed to have invested a lot of money in the family, something Andreu wanted to maintain, so he decided to pretend the baby was his and sent Nadia away. It still doesn't make sense that he would send Josephine away, as if he wanted to ruin his child. It doesn't help that both the love of his life and his wife are out of his life; wouldn't it have made more sense to leave Josephine and try to keep them together? I'm sure Andreu could have done something to win her over. Or he would have blackmailed her, like the rich do.
The worst part is that, for some reason, Nadia didn't know she was pregnant until she gave birth. But it was Lucia who told Andreu about the affair, and she saw it all unfold before her eyes, knowing that her brother was going to leave his wife and fall apart. That's why she decided to stay in France and not move to London with Oliver. But instead of helping his mother, Andreu sent her away, committed her to a psychiatric facility, and simply disappeared. This is what left Mathieu so defeated and indifferent. I don't think he was evil; I think it's just a product of his circumstances. Anyway, Manon and Hadrien found her mother, and Manon decided to get revenge on her grandfather for sending her away and ruining her life forever.
Manon's malice isn't explained in the series. I guess we're supposed to believe she's like her grandfather. Andreu doesn't do anything malicious, but he does send people to prison for knowing family secrets. It seems like he only does this to add an extremely twisted twist to the series. Mathieu had a lot more motivation as a character to want to do this, but we also don't see Manon doing it for her father. Surely she could have talked to her grandfather first, right? That would have at least gotten her mother out, if that were still possible.
The first murder in the series is Andreu's, which triggers everything else. The one who killed him is Manon. Now, Hadrien has a sun tattoo on his back, and when Leo sees it, he freaks out because it's the only thing he saw in his kidnapper. When Manon gave the book to Hadrien, it seemed like he didn't know what she was up to, which makes me think they both had matching back tattoos, so it's possible Leo accidentally killed the wrong child. Although the series gives the impression that Hadrien would hurt Leo, I think they were actually becoming friends and could have been good friends. But perhaps Manon did force him to kidnap the child. Unfortunately, Hadrien is killed by an arrow Leo accidentally shoots at him. By the time Manon and Alba arrive, he's already gone. But this allows them to pretend he was the one who killed Andreu so Manon can get her way and Alba and her can go their separate ways.
Manon wanted revenge on Alba, which is why she put Leo in danger so many times and even tried to get Valentin to kill her, but in the end, it didn't matter because she lost her brother, the only person who could understand her, and if she had admitted to killing Andreu, her life would have been over. But now, Alba allows her to continue living and carrying on with her normal life.
The end of Under a Dark Sun reveals that Nadia is still alive and well, but no one knows she had a baby. Nadia is now rich (apparently) and married with another child. It seems her second pregnancy made her think a lot about the daughter she had in the rose field, which made her nauseous, so she decided to search for her. Now, the fact that Alba is Mathieu's daughter makes her the heir to the property. But Beatrice and Mathieu want to sell it, while Lucie doesn't. This puts everyone in a difficult situation; however, I think Nadia is going to buy the property; she is a perfumer, after all. By then, Alba and her son have moved into a nice apartment, she also has a good job at a fast-food restaurant, and everything seems to be going well for her. Also, somehow, Beatrice didn't die, and I'm still trying to understand if she's meant to be a comic relief character because of her expressionless face or if we're supposed to take her seriously. Besides, we never find out who stabbed Beatrice in the hospital, and no one seems to care. She herself acts as if nothing happened.
