Netflix is getting a little more magical this year. Two new specials from the "Unicorn Academy" universe will premiere on Netflix in 2025, TheWrap has learned exclusively.
The first of these specials is the hour-long "Legendary Summer," which will premiere on April 9, a date aptly also known as National Unicorn Day. It will be followed by the 44-minute "Winter Solstice" on November 6.
Creators: Robert Lamoreaux, Michelle Lamoreaux
Stars: Sara Garcia, Kolton Stewart, Sadie Laflamme-Snow
"Legendary Summer" will center on Layla (Kamaia Fairburn). "Desiring to make a unique discovery like her idol, Professor Faraday, Layla brings a grimoire flower to Unicorn Island that causes Glacier to lose its powers and endangers the world's magic," the special's synopsis reads.
Set on Unicorn Island and described as "every child's dream boarding school," "Unicorn Academy" follows Sophia Mendoza and the rest of her first-year class as they connect with their unicorns to unleash their magical powers and become the protectors of the island and its magic. Add in homework and balancing friendships, and it becomes a daunting task.
"Unicorn Academy" comes from Spin Master Corp., the world's leading children's entertainment company, and is an adaptation of Julie Sykes' New York Times bestselling books. The series premiered on Netflix in November 2023. By the time Chapter 2 premiered eight months later, the series was a hit, reaching number 1 in children's and family viewership in over 90 countries. "Unicorn Academy" has been named the most popular series for girls aged six to nine, according to Netflix's September 2024 report. The series has been greenlit, and more magic is expected to premiere in 2026.
The children's show has also proven popular for short-form digital content, a growing need for Generation Alpha. "Unicorn Academy"'s social media has garnered over 19 million views on YouTube and TikTok. It is also a benchmark in the toy market, with toys available in 30 countries. "Unicorn Academy" was the number 1 new toy property in France and Germany in 2024, according to market research firm Circana.
