Netflix offers us once again another new unscripted television series. Surviving Paradise premieres on Netflix on Friday, October 20, and all nine episodes will be available to stream in one go. Surviving Paradise appears to have several elements taken from previous reality shows. Firstly, there is a fabulous beachfront villa situated on a hillside.
A group of twelve unexpected and handsome young people who hope to live the experience of a lifetime. Outside the villa, among the bushes, is the alternative world. A dark and humid forest, with its makeshift camp and very few amenities available. There is romance between the contestants and, with the joy of friendship and bond, comes anger and revenge. There is a presenter, a comedian to keep the 12 participants interested. All the ingredients for an exciting and highly anticipated reality show.
Star: Jessimae Peluso
However, the specific details of the program itself are quite vague. Surviving Paradise, and no, it is not based on the documentary series Surviving Paradise: A Family Tale, which is also on Netflix. This Surviving Paradise, according to the show's creators, says the three-sentence synopsis. “Twelve contestants believe they are going to have the summer of their lives, living a life of luxury in a villa on top of a cliff by the sea. What they don't know is that they will have to start from scratch, living in the forest without luxurious comforts. Through friendships and alliances, they will band together to make their way to the village for a chance to win the grand prize of $100,000.”
There's also a 2-minute promotional video showing a cast of fun-loving young contestants popping bottles of champagne and splashing around poolside. Under glorious sunny skies and surrounded by lush green scenery, further details of the promotion can be found. Our carefree contestants are now drinking more champagne while lying on a yacht with the wind in their hair. When the sun sets, the party begins with dancing and frolicking in a huge, luxurious glass-fronted villa overlooking the expansive sea. One of the contestants is heard saying "there's nothing better than this in life." Suddenly the lights go out room by room to the surprise and horror of the group. Then the narrator's voice is heard: “In this game everyone starts with nothing.”
The contestants now walk into the forest in the dark and look miserable. Bikinis, gourmet meals, and beautiful smiles are now replaced by hoodies, campfire rice, and tears. The conversation no longer revolves around how fabulous everything is, but rather the smell that comes out of the makeshift toilet. Now it's up to the contestants to find a way to return to their opulent villa lifestyle. The 12 contestants are divided into 2 groups. A handful live large in the villa eating tasty food, drinking cocktails and playing pool. While the other contestants talk about how horrible it is, they didn't sign up for this and how to get back to the villa.
To return to the villa, it seems you must make alliances with the other cast members. On the other hand, the group is also made up of enemies who would want to keep you down so they can get out. It is also suggested that the contestants can vote to return to the villa. Those at the top of the village seem to have no chores to do and are simply having fun and enjoying the facilities. The contestants in the forest below are busy surviving, searching for food, and living off the land. It is not explained what is required of them to get out of danger. Nor is it said how the $100,000 grand prize is won, presumably once back in the villa.
Trying to reconstruct the rules of Surviving Paradise is not easy. Perhaps this is what the show's producers are trying to do: make viewers guess, so they will wait and watch the show to figure it all out. In the promo for the show, you see two of the contestants below running with backpacks, suggesting that there are tasks to complete to get back to the big life. Although this could simply be to get food to survive. There are also scenes showing all the contestants from both sides lined up against each other. Possibly at this point they will be told whether they will ascend to the good life or return to misery. New contestants are also seen appearing on the show, which would suggest there are additional twists for the original 12 contestants. What's certain is that there are plenty of twists and turns in Surviving Paradise, and it's up to the contestants and equally the viewers to see how it all plays out.
