While Warner Bros. has spent the last decade trying to turn DC Comics movies into some sort of live-action coherence, their output of animated movies has generally remained steady. The 2010s saw more than a dozen films based on or inspired by the New 52 line of comics, then rebooted in a new film series beginning with 2020's Superman: Man of Tomorrow and Batman: The Long Halloween. Next year's Legion of Super-Heroes continues the now five-film franchise using Superman and Supergirl to spotlight one of DC's B-tier superhero teams.
In the movie, Supergirl shows up on Earth and is ready to fight alongside her cousin, albeit with the bumps that it takes to be a hero for the first time. To help her get the hang of things, Superman (Darren Criss) takes her to the 31st century, where the Legion Academy is happy to teach her the ropes of superheroing. Having Brainiac 5 (Harry Shum Jr.) as a classmate isn't good for Kara Zor-El, but it's something she eventually learns to deal with if it means she won't be tearing down buildings while she's fighting crime.

During her time at the Academy, Kara and her classmates such as Mon-El (Yuri Lowenthal), Timber Wolf (Robbie Daymond), and Phantom Girl (Gideon Adland) discover that the school is being invaded by a criminal group called Dark. Circle. With the original members of the Heavy Hitting Legion missing in action, stopping the Circle and saving the school falls to Kara and the rest of the students.
Kara teaming up with the Legion is not new territory; Even setting aside the futuristic team featured in Supergirl, both Superman and his son Jon have spent time in the 31st century. Most recently, Young Justice: Phantoms it also included some members of the crew during its run. What will be interesting to see is what else is in the future for the Legion, and what steps James Gunn and Peter Safran will take to make sure we see more of these heroes in the future.
Legion of Super-Heroes will be the sixth entry in the Tomorrowverse, a collection of DC animated films that share a cohesive animation style and continuity. The shared universe began in 2020 with its namesake Superman: Man of Tomorrow and has continued with Justice Society: World War II, Batman: The Long Halloween, Parts One and Two (all 2021), and Green Lantern: Beware My Power (2022). . The franchise is the successor to the DC Animated Movie Universe, which launched with 2013's Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox and ended with 2020's Justice League Dark: Apokolips War.
Legion of Super-Heroes will mark the first time fans will see Ackles' Batman and Criss' Superman interact following their respective Tomorrowverse debuts. Though not confirmed at this time, both actors are expected to return for Justice League: Warworld, the seventh film in DC's new animated timeline, set to release in 2023 after Legion of Super-Heroes. While plot details for the upcoming crossover movie are under wraps, Warworld will presumably see the DC Universe's greatest superheroes battle Mongul, the ruler of a planet-sized satellite known as Warworld.
