Cinema has changed a lot in recent years; what was once the main form of entertainment has lost that title to video games, streaming, and social media. Therefore, it seems that not all movies deserve to be seen in theaters; buying a ticket, paying for gas, and other expenses is costly, and audiences have to choose carefully. That's where reviews come in, and in this case, Shelter, Jason Statham's new film, is one of those movies that's better watched at home.
Director: Ric Roman Waugh
Writer: Ward Parry
Stars: Jason Statham, Harriet Walter, Bill Nighy
Screenwriter Ward Parry revisits the lone wolf theme and develops a simple story about redemption, grief, and, of course, a tough, weary guy who kills a lot of bad guys. And that's enough for the film. It's true that it lacks surprises and the plot twists are predictable, but the film takes itself so seriously that any other direction would feel out of place and could harm the final result.
However, there's also a structural problem, as the first half of the film takes its time introducing the characters and the situation, but the second half feels too rushed, as if the film needed at least 30 more minutes to build proper tension at the end. This hurts the film, and while it's still entertaining, something doesn't quite work.
Jason Statham is the star; he produces these films for himself and understands what he can bring to the table. The result is a familiar performance, but with plenty of presence, which manages to carry the film from beginning to end.
In his latest film, Statham plays Mason, a former Royal Marine assassin hiding out in the Scottish Hebrides. When a storm hits the island, Mason rescues Jesse (Bodhi Rae Breathnach), a young woman who has been supplying him with provisions. The rescue comes at a price, as he is relentlessly pursued by his former boss, the head of MI6 (Bill Nighy), who deploys all available resources, including a new intelligence system called Thea and a hitman known as Workman (Bryan Vigier).
