*Bandi* is a 2026 French crime drama series, available for streaming on Netflix and set entirely on the Caribbean island of Martinique—a French overseas territory. This eight-episode series follows the lives of Kylian Lafleur and his ten siblings, who face one extreme hardship after another following the accidental death of their beloved and protective mother; all this unfolds amidst a shifting dynamic on the streets of Martinique, marked by a surge in drug-related violence. While *Bandi* unfortunately does not truly explore the essence of Martinique or the lives of its islanders in any profound sense, its intense and gritty plot is enough to impress fans of the action genre and leave them eagerly awaiting a second season.
*Bandi* opens on an apparently ordinary night in the French territory of Martinique, in the Antilles, where three young men wait and keep watch over a specific commercial establishment from a distance. However, when the shopkeeper lowers the shutters and leaves, the night takes an unusual turn for the trio, who don masks and rush hurriedly toward the premises. It becomes evident that they plan to rob the business, but carrying it out is no simple task—at least not for individuals as ill-prepared as they are.
The young men, clearly, had not thought the plan through thoroughly; they are easily detected by the store's interior security camera, through which the owner even speaks to them to warn them to leave. Despite the owner's threat—warning that Milord, a dangerous criminal gang leader to whom he pays protection money, will ruin their lives—the young men eventually find some cash and make off with it. As the following day unfolds, it becomes evident that the thieves were led by a man named Kingsley—or "King," to his friends—as his ring is clearly visible in the footage captured by the security camera.
King is one of eleven siblings in the large yet affectionate Lafleur family, headed by their strong-willed mother, Marilyn. Although in recent months King has resorted to criminal means to earn a living—primarily by committing petty theft—Marilyn remains adamant that no money obtained through illegal or immoral channels shall ever cross the threshold of her home. While her eldest son, Marvin, and one of her daughters, Ambre, share her moral ideals, what Marilyn—and the rest of her family—remains completely unaware of is that another of her sons, Kylian, is actually involved in a full-blown drug-smuggling enterprise, despite being only 16 years old. In fact, Kylian is none other than "Milord," the feared drug lord who has carved out a reputation for himself on the streets of Martinique over the past year or so—a figure whose true identity is known only to his lieutenant, "Fatso," and a select few others.
Marilyn raises all her children single-handedly and, naturally, struggles to make ends meet; at the same time, she lives in constant fear that one of her many ex-husbands—all of whom are convicted criminals—might show up to harm them. However, before the children must face any external dangers, they suffer the tragedy of losing their beloved mother when Marilyn dies in a traffic accident, leaving them orphaned. The older siblings—Marvin, King, and Annabelle—find themselves overwhelmed by the responsibility of caring for the entire family, which includes several young children who are ultimately removed from their custody by the authorities and sent to live with their cruel aunt. Desperate to help his family—and, simultaneously, to establish himself as a successful businessman who is both feared and respected by all—Kylian decides to expand his local drug-smuggling ring into an international operation.
King meets and befriends a woman named Margot after having stalked her on Instagram; his intention is to involve her in a scheme. At the beginning of the series, King steals a stash of drugs belonging to a feared gangster known as SherKhan, with the aim of selling it on the French mainland. However, to execute such a daring business venture, he needs a woman willing to transport the drugs—concealed inside her own body—and fly them to Europe; consequently, he approaches Margot to act, in essence, as his drug mule.
Margot rejects the proposal but maintains contact with him, as it is evident that she wishes to extract some kind of benefit from the situation. Over time, King manages to acquire another large stash of drugs—this time stolen from a wealthy and highly influential businessman named Alex Croquet—and brings it to Margot's apartment, having found nowhere else to hide it. It is at this point that Margot appears most determined to betray King and use the drugs to improve her own life circumstances. It is revealed that she is in debt and, consequently, in urgent need of money; this means that if she were to secretly sell the drugs hidden in her apartment, Margot could not only settle her debt but also—perhaps—leave Martinique and start a new life elsewhere.
After King ends up murdering SherKhan, and members of the latter's gang descend upon Margot's apartment in search of their enemy, she is physically assaulted—simply because of her close friendship with King. Once again, at this juncture, it seems that Margot will turn King in and sell his drugs. But the exact opposite occurs: Margot endures the assault without revealing anything about King to the gangsters, repeatedly lying by claiming that the two have not been in contact for a long time.
What proves even more surprising is that Margot does not even keep the drugs for herself; instead, she hands them over to King when he comes to retrieve them. Her decision to act in this manner suggests that either Margot has truly begun to develop feelings for King, or she considers him a more suitable business partner than anyone else—trusting that he will pay her the share of the profits he had promised. Fortunately for King, the woman in whom he had placed his blind trust does not betray him, making the final plot twist all the more ironic and cruel.
Kylian’s biological father, Fabrice Sifflet, is a convicted criminal currently incarcerated at Ducos Prison in Martinique. It is abundantly clear that Kylian has inherited his father’s inclination toward a life of crime, though their mindsets are almost polar opposites. While Kylian acknowledges that he has chosen the criminal path to build a stable life for himself and his siblings—claiming he has no other option—Fabrice is someone who genuinely prefers to take the easy way out and avoid any effort or hard work.
In this instance, I am compelled to question whether Kylian truly lacks any alternative to drug smuggling, given that he is still attending school and, consequently, could have chosen a more lawful means of livelihood. Perhaps he feels discouraged by observing the life and trajectory of Marvin—a man who has always been honest and hardworking, yet is currently forced to work multiple menial jobs just to make ends meet, all while struggling to secure a loan to launch his own app.
Kylian maintains contact with his father and visits him frequently in prison; however, Fabrice brings nothing but trouble into his son's life. For starters, Fabrice opposes Kylian’s plan to financially support all his siblings, arguing that—technically speaking—they are merely his half-siblings. Given that Fabrice is one of the few people aware of the existence of Kylian’s drug-smuggling operation since its inception, he demands half of all the profits generated by said activity—basing his claim solely on their blood ties—despite playing absolutely no role in the management of this illicit trade. Furthermore, he dispatches his own brother—Jocelyn, a drug addict completely under Fabrice’s thumb—to assault the Lafleur family in an attempt to seize the bulk of Kylian’s money.
