With Kimmie now serving as the new CEO—and with all of Horace’s money under her control—things take a turn for the Bellarie family, whose members will stop at nothing to get the money they believe they deserve.
Perry deserves credit for consistently devising some of the most absurd and convoluted storylines we’ve witnessed in recent years. *Beauty in Black*—a colossal production featuring an ensemble cast and an excess of plots and subplots—returns with another equally nonsensical season, following a first installment that was, quite frankly, terrible.
Creator: Tyler Perry
Stars: Taylor Polidore Williams, Crystle Stewart, Amber Reign Smith
The thing about this series is that, before diving into its madness, one must lock their brain away; and the second season only heightens this necessity, as—across its 16 episodes—nothing truly noteworthy actually happens. It all boils down to Mallory and Roy treating each other with utter disrespect, Varney acting excessively codependent, and Kimmie cowering in fear over a situation she chose to get involved in herself. This season proves so mind-numbingly insipid that it led me to question the very reason for its existence.
The second season focuses primarily on Kimmie, who transforms into the "ruthless boss" that Horace needs her to be, while the rest of the Bellarie clan scrambles to find a way to stop her. For some strange reason, barely anything of consequence happens to any of the characters this season; viewers will most likely end up frustrated by the total absence of plot or narrative progression. A new character is introduced who initially seems interesting but ends up relegated to a sort of narrative limbo, contributing very little drama that feels truly engaging—not even in the "guilty pleasure" category.
I don’t even have much to analyze because, honestly, there is nothing to analyze. Every storyline introduced this season boils down to mere superficial plot twists—which are resolved or explained in the very next scene—or to absurd situations completely devoid of any logical foundation. It took seven episodes for the season to finally showcase Kimmie’s confrontation with the entire Bellarie clan, and even then, nothing of any real substance actually happened. Admittedly, watching her triumph over them armed with nothing but facts and figures is entertaining, but it is far from being a memorable moment.
The second half of the season—released nearly a year later—continues to pile on and amplify these characters, who are so toxic and, frankly, irritating. My primary objection to this series lies precisely in that: the behavior of practically every character is so illogical that it borders on the absurd. Constantly hurling insults at one another, there isn't a single moment where anyone actually uses their head to get something done; instead, they opt to behave in a chaotic, unruly manner, expecting things to resolve themselves simply through the sheer force of profanity.
Perhaps the most annoying aspect is the way they all try to appear more important than they actually are, projecting an air of superiority so feigned that you can spot it from a mile away. The problem is that we watch them fail time and again at everything they attempt, so trying to convince us that their threats carry any weight comes across as hilariously stupid. I don't understand what these characters are supposed to represent—or even who they actually are—but whatever they are, they certainly aren't any good.
But I always come back to the same point: when it comes to *Beauty in Black*, all these people are, quite simply, utterly vulgar. They are disrespectful, they squabble amongst themselves in public, and they lack any shred of self-respect. I find it entertaining up to a certain point; however, when a show's characters are so morally bankrupt and possess absolutely no redeeming qualities, things eventually become extremely boring.
