Netflix presents a new documentary about the deadly 2011 Joplin tornado. What does it feel like to be caught in the eye of a storm and make it out alive? This documentary features students who experienced the storm firsthand and somehow survived to tell their terrifying stories.
The documentary features 2011 graduates recounting how the happiest day of their lives turned into tragedy that same night. "To think we were all celebrating life 24 hours before the worst thing that could happen," says one survivor in the trailer.

Another revealed that the graduates celebrated their accomplishments with a party after the ceremony. So the students stayed to enjoy themselves to the fullest, only to realize that death was calling. Survivors recount how the sky suddenly darkened and the loud, terrifying noises they heard.
"It was a monster," one person stated. Because the school was in the storm's path, it was quickly reaching the trapped and terrified students. The trailer included real nighttime footage, with distorted images of the storm and people panicking in their cars.
One of the students recalled looking up at the clear blue sky, surrounded by chaos, and realizing they were in the eye of the storm. "I felt my body lift off the ground," added another. People didn't know how much longer they would withstand the pressure, and some even accepted their fate.
But how did they survive? That's the story unfolding in this Netflix documentary. The students in the trailer are some of the lucky ones who made it out of the storm alive. The Joplin tornado, the deadliest storm to hit the United States since 1947, flooded 161 people and destroyed more than 8,000 homes and buildings.
The Tornado Caught in the Storm will premiere on Netflix on March 19, 2025.
