Awooo! Universal and Blumhouse have released the first trailer for “Wolf Man,” starring Christopher Abbott as the classic horror monster.
Abbott stars in the film alongside Julia Garner. The film marks an on-screen reunion for the actors, as the pair worked together in 2011’s “Martha, Marcy, May, Marlene,” Garner’s first professional acting role.
Director: Leigh Whannell
Writers: Leigh Whannell, Corbett Tuck
Stars: Julia Garner, Christopher Abbott, Sam Jaeger
This is not Abbott’s debut in the horror genre, as she starred in 2017’s “It Comes at Night.” Abbott also recently appeared in the Oscar-nominated “Poor Things” and 2019’s “Catch-22.” Garner rose to fame after her three-time Emmy-winning performance as Ruth Langmore in “Ozark.” She also received a nomination for 2022’s “Inventing Anna,” receiving an Emmy nomination for her role as Anna Delvey in the Shonda Rhimes limited series.
“Wolf Man” is directed by Leigh Whannell, the “Saw” co-creator who also helmed the 2020 horror hit “The Invisible Man,” which grossed $144 million at the global box office. It is also the filmmaker’s fourth Blumhouse film, following “The Invisible Man,” “Upgrade” and “Insidious: Chapter 3.” Whannell is writing alongside Corbett Tuck, Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo. Jason Blum is producing the film, a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production, while Ryan Gosling (initially attached to star), Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers.
Years ago, Universal envisioned an interconnected Dark Universe to reboot past monster movies set in a shared world. However, plans were shelved following the critical and commercial failure of 2017’s “The Mummy,” starring Tom Cruise. Talk of the universe began to pick up again on the Internet after the critical and commercial success of “The Invisible Man.” Since then, Universal has also released two Dracula-inspired films, “Renfield,” starring Nicolas Cage, and “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” which received mixed reviews and were considered box office failures.
“The Wolfman” is set for release on January 17.
