I Heart Willie 2025 Movie Review Trailer Poster

Mickey Mouse horror movies show no signs of stopping anytime soon, and in 2025 another one is coming that will finally take the best out of Steamboat Willie. Horror adaptations of children's characters and stories are one of the most popular current trends in the genre, and one character that is being used by many filmmakers is Steamboat Willie. The classic Walt Disney short film entered the public domain on January 1, 2024, and a horror adaptation of the character, The Mouse Trap, was announced that same day, and that was the beginning of a wave of Mickey Mouse horror adaptations.

2025 is gearing up for the release of Screamboat, directed by Steven LaMorte. Screamboat takes audiences on a nighttime ferry ride through New York City, where passengers and crew are chased and attacked by a tiny but murderous mouse. However, Screamboat is not the only horror version of Mickey Mouse coming out this year, as there is another one that seems to go further in its violence, but also in terms of narrative. Titled I Heart Willie, it is directed by Alejandro G. Alegre, and captures the best element of Steamboat Willie that others have left out.

Director: Alejandro G. Alegre
Writer: David Vaughn
Stars: Maya Luna, Sergio Rogalto, Daniela Porras

Steamboat Willie doesn't complicate things with its plot: Mickey Mouse (in his public debut) is piloting a side-wheeled steamboat and has some issues with the captain, Pete. What follows are Mickey's hilarious attempts to pick up a shipment of cattle, get Minnie Mouse on board, fight off a goat that eats a ukulele and sheet music, and more. As simple as it is, this also makes Steamboat Willie perfect material for adaptations, especially horror ones, as it leaves many unanswered (but innocent) questions.

I Heart Willie takes the best and most obvious element of Steamboat Willie that other Mickey Mouse horror movies have ignored: its origin. The actual origin of Steamboat Willie and Mickey Mouse is not at all disturbing or controversial, as the character was created as a replacement for Oswald the Lucky Rabbit; however, I Heart Willie found a way to make it work. In it, two popular YouTubers investigate the legend of Steamboat Willie, a boy who was born with deformities that make him look like a human/mouse hybrid and who inspired the famous Walt Disney short film.

The legend turns out to be real, and the real Willie grew up as an abused and isolated child, who has spent years crafting a suit from the skins of those who venture into the woods. What reignites interest in the Willie legend is a series of disappearances, leading Daniel and Nico to investigate; little do they know, they'll be entering a deadly game of survival. Instead of being a serial killer in a Mickey Mouse mask or a deadly little mouse, I Heart Willie is giving its villain a reason to do what he does.

I Heart Willie already has the elements of a horror movie, and giving Steamboat Willie a disturbing backstory already makes it different from similar works, but it has an added twist that can either make it better or destroy it. Alegre shared that in addition to giving the beloved short film a chilling origin story and a sinister reimagining of the iconic mouse, I Heart Willie is also one of the “most horrifying love stories” of 2025 (via Bloody Disgusting); however, it’s unknown what the love story in it actually is.

The only trailer for I Heart Willie so far does a good job of teasing the horrors Willie will unleash on Daniel, Nico, and more, but it doesn’t reveal too much of its plot. It’s possible that Willie develops an attraction to one of the female characters shown in the trailer, who are terrorized by him in the woods with the rest.

Incorporating a love story amidst the chaos, violence, and murder in I Heart Willie could benefit the film if it’s well-written and handled, giving it an interesting twist, or it could ruin it entirely, clashing with the tone of the rest of the film and not being properly justified.

The first trailer for I Heart Willie gives a quick glimpse of the kind of horror you can expect from it, and it's very reminiscent of two recent horror hits: the Terrifier film series and In A Violent Nature. The trailer shows Willie manipulating pieces of skin, splattering characters with blood, cutting off one of his victim's legs, and wearing his mouse mask (which could be made of human flesh). I Heart Willie is gore-inducing, which inevitably brings to mind the Terrifier films.

The villain living in the woods and chasing intruders is reminiscent of In A Violent Nature, which also had graphic death scenes. I Heart Willie joins this wave of violent horror films, and depending on how it handles this tone, it may be key to its success with audiences, further helping to sell the idea of a killer.

The Acolyte 2024 Tv Series Review Trailer Poster

There are three main types of Star Wars stories. There's the kind where you write whatever you want and call it Star Wars, common in the many novels published in the 1990s. There's the kind where you recycle existing Star Wars stories and make them familiar; this has been the primary way of doing things at Disney. But finally, there are the stories that enthusiastically use Star Wars as a setting to create something new. There have been several novels that fit that profile, as did the first season of Andor, and now, four episodes in, it looks like the new Star Wars series The Acolyte, set a century before the movies, also fits the bill. in that category. . The Acolyte centers on a pair of twins, Osha and Mae (both played by Amandla Stenberg). The girls were raised by an unaffiliated coven of Force users, but despite living outside the Republic, the Jedi, including Carrie-Ann Moss's Indara, stuck their noses into these women's affairs, leading to the disaster. As a resu...

Zero Day 2025 Tv Series Review Trailer Poster

Angela Bassett, Joan Allen, Connie Britton, Jesse Plemons, and Lizzy Caplan co-star in a series about politicians trying to find answers after a deadly cyberattack. During a break in the second half of Netflix’s six-part political thriller Zero Day (and there are more breaks than there should be), I began to contemplate how much more efficiently the show’s central crisis could be resolved with the help of Owen Hendricks, the protagonist of Netflix’s The Recruit, or Peter Sutherland, the protagonist of Netflix’s The Night Agent. Creators: Eric Newman, Noah Oppenheim, Michael Schmidt Stars: Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, Lizzy Caplan The last few Netflix political thrillers have largely become fungible due to the streaming platform’s compact release schedule. The Diplomat is the best of this bunch, so I’ll leave it out of the conversation. The Recruit is a silly show, but it dives into its absurdities with a reckless, fast-paced abandon that I appreciate. The Night Agent takes itsel...

Cassandra 2025 Tv Series Review Trailer Poster

The science fiction genre is a testament to man’s obsession with robots. The idea of creating an entity that would take care of mundane or even complex tasks has always been an exciting prospect, and it’s almost instinctive to imagine advancements in robotics whenever we talk about the future. With Tesla’s Optimus breaking the internet recently, having a home robot may no longer be a far-fetched dream. The German Netflix series Cassandra revolves around a robot that was created to be a house companion in the early 70s but has since been abandoned. When a family moved into the smart home, the system was suddenly activated and soon trouble began. The story of the rogue robot is not a new one; it usually starts with a bug in programming or an advancement in technology that makes robots realize they can defeat humans to take over their world. But Cassandra is not your typical story of a robot going rogue; it’s much more detailed than that. And while dramatically the details and back...
