Years ago, a high school boy named Franco went to a party with two of his best friends, Mario and Bolillo. It wasn't exactly a party, but more of a triple date scenario. There were only six people (Mario, Bolillo, his two girlfriends, Franco and another girl from school) who were far from pretty. Franco's friends didn't want him to feel left out and I guess the same thing happened to the girl. Soon, Mario's girlfriend took him to his room.
Franco wanted to go too, until he realized that showing him the room was just an excuse for you-know-what. Bolillo and the girl soon ended up in the bathroom. Now Franco was alone with the girl. He wasn't attracted to her per se, but he was a boy who didn't believe he could impress a woman, so he would make whatever decision he had. Then Franco ended up kissing the girl. It lasted eighteen and a half minutes, only because Franco didn't know how to get things to fourth base from first. Because the movies hadn't taught him yet. So that was it.
Director: Franco Escamilla
Star: Franco Escamilla
When Mario and Bolillo talked about the amount of sexual pleasures, Franco didn't know what they were talking about. Anyway, Franco was happy to at least have a girlfriend. His father couldn't believe it, but upon knowing that the girl was not at all "pretty", he was convinced. But the next day, Franco was surprised to see that his “girlfriend” rejected him and laughed at the idea of being with him. A few days later, there was a hygiene camp at the school. And it turned out that someone had lice.
That someone turned out to be that girl who rejected Franco. People started harassing her and Franco thought it would be good to try again now that he no longer had any friends. So he tried again, but was rejected again. The girl was very polite this time and she explained that she only kissed because there was no one else. Franco's self-esteem plummeted, especially considering that this girl was not pretty; In fact, quite the opposite.
Many years later, Franco Escamilla tells this story in his Netflix comedy special, titled Ladies Man. He makes a dramatic entrance in which several women try to get a piece of him and the man has to dodge them all. He presents himself as a womanizer, but is now happily married to his wife Gabi. His first act turns out to be a magic trick to impress women, for which he invites an audience member to volunteer. This random guy, José, intervenes. But the card trick fails and Franco blames José.
It's all part of the act, of course, except José, and also a demonstration of why Franco is a comedian rather than a magician. Once he establishes José as this "trick ruiner," Franco moves on to his high school story. The point here is that Ladies Man is more memoir than stand-up. Escamilla doesn't really tell jokes. He basically tells the story of his life, well, mainly about his dating women. I'm not sure how much of what he says on stage is true or not, but it's fascinating to listen to nonetheless. And Escamilla may not tell you jokes, but his stories are ironically funny, so the audience keeps laughing anyway.
Going back to Franco's story, once he was rejected by the girl with the lice (they called her Pesimo), he decided to never try his luck with any woman again. Well, that was until he met Karina, when he was in eighth grade. Karina, according to Franco, was very pretty and she was dating a boy named Carlos Alberto. Franco and Carlos were both in music class, where Franco became very good at the guitar. She didn't like Carlos, but Karina continued dating him. After what happened with Lousy (by the way, I'm not trying to demean her, I'm just going by what Franco called her), this was like shooting for a star. Franco first thought it would be better to talk less, because words often ruin things. So he played the role of the silent guy. But when Karina said that she would cheer Franco up if he participated in the school music contest, he went into plan B, which was to be a rock star (to impress her, of course).
Franco participated in the contest, challenging a not-so-welcoming audience just for Karina, and he performed better than anyone. Now that everyone was impressed, he thought he could have anyone and no longer cared about Karina, a behavior that the adult Franco criticizes on stage. Unfortunately for him, there was another girl, Twangy (that's her previous name), with a very nasal voice but a sensational singing talent. Even after collapsing midway through, Twangy won. Franco lost the fight and his chances with Karina. As fate would have it, he reunited with Karina in high school and she told him about her crush on him.
