A decade ago, the world watched as a barely 6-foot redshirt rookie quarterback at Texas A&M took college football by storm with his flair for dramatic backyard flair and an ego the size of a lone star to match.
The phenomenon known as "Johnny Football" is highlighted in a new Netflix documentary set to premiere on August 8, and in the first 10 minutes you see different sides of Johnathan Paul Manziel, the incredible talent who brought the Aggies to a center attention never seen before. , the party animal, the blunt truth teller, and the remorseful, flawed human being who knows no limits, especially when mistakes are made in the public eye.
Director: Ryan Duffy
Star: Johnny Manziel
In the 111-minute production, the layers of Manziel's life peel back, chronicling his meteoric rise in college football and becoming the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy, until his crash landing in the NFL after being selected in the first round of the 2014 Draft by the Cleveland Browns.
The "good country boy" from Kerrville, Texas, now a resident of Scottsdale, Arizona, said now is the time to tell his story without filters or excuses.
"I still go out in everyday life and I have so many people come up to me and ask about soccer, you know, are you still playing or are you doing that? You're doing that," Manziel told USA TODAY Sports. "So, a decade later, I reflected on that quite a bit and felt like it was a good time. Able to take a bow on the 'Johnny Football' side of things, to stop a lot of those questions that I get and be able to tell one amazing story and being able to move on with my life. I had an incredible opportunity with Netflix and invaluable to be able to do this. And it felt good."
